It's time we ban pitbulls

Enough is enough. These dogs are way too strong & unpredictable. Plus, they are normally owned by the wrong people. Deadly combo right there.

This latest pitbull attack is absolutely heartbreaking.

A 14-month-old Wisconsin boy has died after a brutal attack by a pair of pit bulls, authorities said on Thursday.
Police received a call from Susan Iwicki, 30, on Wednesday saying that she and the young boy were being attacked by the dogs, according to local NBC affiliate WMTV. Iwicki told police that she and the boy had each sustained injuries.

The boy died of his injuries at a Milwaukee area hospital later on Wednesday, the Walworth County sheriff’s office said, according to The Associated Press.
The boy had the “biggest eyes, great smile,” family friend Valerie Brylow told local affiliate WTMJ. “He was a great little boy.”
“He is adorable, absolutely adorable,” Nicole Jennison, another family friend told the station.
The boy’s name has not been released, and an investigation continues. Both of the pit bulls were removed from the property and euthanized on Wednesday, WMTV reported.
The fatal dog attack was the first in Wisconsin in a decade, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Clearly this is all just a massive conspiracy by the media. Those poor little pit bulls would never hurt a fly. Ask anyone.

Well, you probably don't want to ask this guy:

Spoiler!

Or this little girl:

Spoiler!

Or this person (I think it used to be a woman):

Spoiler!

This guy survived the attack, but I'm guessing he's not overly fond of pit bulls these days:

Spoiler!

I put spoiler tags around the images. It just seemed like bad taste not to do so.

I can look up rottweiler attack, doberman attack, german shepard attack on google images and find equally gruesome pictures.

Aside from that Pits don't have mutant freakishly powerful jaws. Your hyperbole is ridiculous. Rotties bite just as hard as pits yet you aren't suggesting they should be banned.
From a study of dog attacks over the 30 year period from 1982 to 2012:

Quote:
There is a persistent allegation by pit bull terrier advocates that pit bulls are overrepresented among reported dog attack deaths and maimings because of misidentifications or because “pit bull” is, according to them, a generic term covering several similar types of dog. However, the frequency of pit bull attacks among these worst-in-10,000 cases is so disproportionate that even if half of the attacks in the pit bull category were misattributed, or even if the pit bull category was split three ways, attacks by pit bulls and their closest relatives would still outnumber attacks by any other breed.

There is also a persistent allegation by pit bull terrier advocates that the use of media accounts as a data source is somehow suspect. Reality is that media coverage incorporates information from police reports, animal control reports, witness accounts, victim accounts in many instances, and hospital reports. Media coverage is, in short, multi-sourced, unlike reports from any single source.
http://mainphrame.com/media/Dog_atta..._June_2012.pdf

Pit Bulls make up 3.3% of the dog population. Between 60% and 70% of dog bite fatalities are caused by Pit Bulls. The statistics speak for themselves.

However, your point about Rotweillers is valid. From the same 30-year study:

Quote:
Any law strong enough and directed enough to prevent the majority of lifethreatening dog attacks must discriminate heavily against pit bulls, Rottweilers, wolf hybrids, and perhaps Akitas and chows, who are not common breeds but do seem to be involved in disproportionate numbers of life-threatening attacks.

True. But the reality is that Pit Bulls make up 3.3% of the dog population. Between 60% and 70% of dog bite fatalities are caused by Pit Bulls.

That's a gruesome statistic that you can't apply to any other breed of dog.

In the final analysis it doesn't really matter if pit bulls were "bred to kill" or not. The only relevant statistic is the number of dog-bite deaths caused by the breed. When 3% of a population account for 60-70% of whatever you're measuring, it's relevant.

Also from the link (and my post):

If you're going to immediately dismiss the study because it was based on press accounts, please explain what single source of information would be preferable to information from police reports, animal control reports, witness accounts, victim accounts in many instances, and hospital reports.

There are several problems with the source.

First, press reports are rarely ever corrected if they are small blurbs which most dog attacks are.

Second, there is a huge selection bias. Media hypes and disproportionately reports on attacks by pitbulls or pitbull type dogs.

Cling to psuedo-science if you want, but that study is in no way accurate due to being solely based on news reports. If it was news reports crossed with police reports and other verification it would be robust. It's not.
