Cities to move to...

So I've lived in MO all my life and the wife and I are contemplating moving next year outside of the state...just wanted to get some thoughts from those who have lived elsewhere besides KCMO or thought about it too.

I'm kinda open to anywhere but I've had a few people tell me that out west is the way to go...heard Boulder, Salt Lake City, and Reno are all nice. Actually had a buddy tell me Wisconsin (Madison specifically) is nice too.

So if any of you were going to move elsewhere where would you suggest?

Tucson and Phoenix are not humid at all. If you think it's bad there you need to go somewhere like Florida during the summer. Or even KC or St. Louis, the humidity is so much worse than Arizona. It's not even in the same ballpark.

I think she was half joking...honestly I think she's more attracted to Florida. I have a sister that lives down there and she's always talking to her about it.

I'd be cool with that but would want to live in a coastal town.

People talk about San Diego being expensive all the time. I've never heard anyone mention Phoenix being equal to San Diego in cost of living until today...and there's probably a reason for that because it simply isn't true.

Keep relying on life experience from years ago, instead of the facts from those who live here now and have learned to read research.
right. phoenix got cheaper over the years. Nobody talks about Phoenix being anything. San Diego is a world city. it gets mentioned more. and ive got no reason to lie either. I was looking in to moving from Tucson to Phoenix. When I seen Phoenix cost just as much as San Diego i decided to move to San Diego where the weather is not horrible.

When you say, "San Diego," are you actually referring to San Diego or places like Poway?

If you are talking pre-recession than you are closer to being right than if you are comparing them right now to each other.

And you're right about the humidity in the summer as well. It's about 6-8 weeks where it comes and goes and can be downright miserable since the temps are above 100 most of the time. However, since the cost of living is cheaper here I could afford a pool so it doesn't bother me much.

I'm simply talking about cost of living and not the city itself. San Diego would be more desirable for me as well but as I stated, it's way more expensive to live there so we chose a cheaper place without snow.

The ocean would be great to live by.

Have you though about San Diego?

I was in Durban in 2010 and every business had armed guards, and many of the retail businesses locked their doors and made you buzz in. The houses I saw had razor wire and in some cases electric fences. And the people there told me that Johannesburg was dangerous.

I don't particularly agree with all of the aspects of their ratings myself.

Restaurants and bars per capita - tends to favor areas with more tourists, but maybe that goes hand in hand with coolness

Entertainment options - this is fine.

Diversity - tends to favor cities near the Mexican border, along with Miami, which is probably why the Texas cities do well in this ranking. I can see an advantage in some diversity, but to some extent this annoys me. It's a self-congratulation.

Population growth - tends to favor cities with younger populations, but maybe that goes along with coolness. Also favors cities near the Mexican border.

Net Migration - Maybe if they included states, North Dakota would be the coolest place in the nation. I guess I don't object completely to this measure, though.

Percent of population age 20-34 - I'm 51 and I'm cooler than almost any 20-34 year-old. But I understand the logic.

having lived in boulder for a short while, i would advise against it. if you move to colorado i would look into ft. collins or suburbs around denver like broomfield, westminster etc..

Is it really? I'm in Rancho Bernardo every couple of weeks and I have no idea what the home prices are like.
