help, again...

my pc has lost it's mind and wouldn't start up without freezing or rebooting during startup...

so dumbass me decides to do a clean install of windows 7 and setup gets all the way to preparing for the first use and it stops right there, and starts rebooting every time it gets to that point...

so i try to reinstall my old winxp, same result, freezes and/or reboots during startup...

i had pulled one of the drives to use in my wife's pc, which had a drive crap out and had reinstalled it on my pc to install windows 7 and get the same results...

nothing had changed except for the second drive being pulled and reinstalled and the fact that i had tried to reinstall both windows 7 and xp...

i thought a clean install would solve my problem but neither os would install without the freezing and/or rebooting going on...

i now have two drives that used to work fine in my pc that won't completely install windows 7 and won't startup xp without doing the freezing/rebooting thing...

can three drives on 2 different pcs all crap out at once?

what can i do about this shit other than a flaming aids tree?

It wouldn't be in CMOS. You would go to advance boot options which I believe if F8 of the top of my head. You can pick what device you would like to boot from.

You can set the boot order in CMOS if you want however.

update: my pc allowed me to reinstall xp and download chrome so i am online now...

don't think it's a software issue after a clean install of xp, but i have gotten a few freezes requiring reboot on the new install...

i guess i'll just browse and whatnot and see if it still freezes, so far it hasn't rebooted...

so, since i did a clean install of xp, there shouldn't be any problem with the software as far as i can see...

yet my pc only works in safe mode...

if i start xp normally it soon hangs and or reboots on its own...

Safe Mode loads the bare minimum. You might want to run some virus scanners to see if you have something conflicting in your system. However, with a clean install that really shouldn't be an issue. Personally with all the issues you are having I would wipe the whole drive in command line and just start over. Also have you updated any drivers lately? An updated driver could be crashing your system. You might need to roll back a driver. What does it do when you click boot to last known good configuration? You prolly want to check your device manager on your video card. There could be driver issues or it could have crapped out on you and causing the freeze ups.

is wiping the drive in command mode better than deleting the partition and re-formatting?

how exactly do i get into command mode and what is the command to wipe it?

i've done the partition/format and started over repeatedly and installed xp many times trying to fix this shit...

i haven't done anything with drivers since the clean installs...

when i use last good configuration it starts just like it does in xp but soon freezes or reboots just like normal starts...

device manager looks normal and i use the onboard video...

Both methods are essentially the same thing. If you completely erased or formatted the drive, and reinstalled Windows clean with no traces of previous programs or data, and you're still getting freezes and restarts before installing drivers, then I would suspect a hardware issue of some kind.

With everything you've reported, it's going to be really hard to pinpoint what's happening without seeing the machine in person.

If you could bring it to KC and leave it with me for a couple days, I bet I could get you back up and running. I've got plenty of spare parts. My treat.

Normally you would put in the installation disk and go to repair. Then click on the command line and type in diskpart. Then use the clean command after it clicks over to diskpart. However, I believe that is only for Vista and 7 so that is probably bad advice for XP. XP I think you just do an install with the installation disk. Just make sure that you delete all previous partitions before you do your new install.

Computer's constanly rebooting usually can be over heating, cmos battery, or power issues if it is hardware. (Since you said your RAM checked out fine)

I would probably try pulling the working drive from your wifes computer and hook it up to this one. See if it works or if you still have problems. If her hard drive works then you know that it is either software or a problem with your drive.
