Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Re: Lars and the real Girl - Ryan Gosling is a good actor. He seems to do a good job picking which scripts he'll take. He'll eventually win an Oscar for something he does, I think.
He was very good in The Believer.

Also very good in Half Nelson. Even though I'm torn over how much I actually liked the movie, his acting was undeniable.

Just got home from Burn After Reading.

Irish, we don't disagree often, but this is one we disagree on. I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I went in expecting dark comedy. Maybe that's the difference.

I just watched Pan's Labyrinth again (a buddy's over who had never seen it).

I assume it's been discussed at some point in this thread, perhaps even by me, but if you haven't seen this movie, WATCH IT. One of the best movies ever made.

I really, really enjoyed this movie.
Yep, both are really good.

See, I sorta knew it'd be a dark comedy, I just didn't find the dark comedy funny. I mean I knew it was there. It just wasn't funny to me.

Big Labowski is WAY better.

You need to watch The Lives of Others, if you haven't seen it. I find that once people can accept subtitles, I can suggest more.

I'm currently trying to get people to watch it.

If it's a good movie, subtitles don't bother me at all. With Pan's Labyrinth, I quickly became so engrossed in the film that I didn't even think about it.

What's Lives of Others about?

What's Lives of Others about?
It's about the Stazi in Germany spying on a famous playwright and his actress wife.

I know that's not a huge description but I hate giving synopsis because I always feel like I'm giving away things.

EDIT: Here's imdb's summary:

In the early 1980s, the successful dramatist Georg Dreyman and his longtime companion Christa-Maria Sieland, a popular actress, are big intellectual stars in the socialist state, although they secretly don't always think loyal to the party line. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life fascinates him more and more

Pan's Labyrinth is a fantastic movie, but I'm convinced that a lot of the dialogue would have sounded really stupid in english.

Another subtitled film that I liked is called, "Kontrol". It's about these guys that work in the Budapest subway system.

Hmmmmm. I never thought of it that way. I don't think so because I thought the subtitles made sense. But hearing it could be different.

Also, has anyone seen Primer?

It's a very engaging story and was interesting to me since it I am not terribly familiar about how things went on in East Germany. Definitely give it a look.
