Phone Repair

My wife dropped her galaxy S4 and shattered the screen. She can still use it to text/read/make phone calls but there are a tone of cracks. I found on Amazon a screen replacement kit for $10 or so, but the "phone medic" has told my wife that in addition to a new screen it will need a new LCD touch screen. He can fix both for $250.

Will the amazon replacement self repair screen work or will the LCD touch screen still be jacked up?

It just depends what is broken

If the LCD and Digitizer are both cracked then you need to replace both

Sometimes you just have to replace the digitizer

I'm guessing you didn't have insurance on the phone?

No insurance, I've declined it on my last 4 phones and this is my first occurance so I think I'm ahead there, but that doesn't really matter right now.

I'm googling what a digitizer is; that probably means I need to pay the $250. How do I check to see if both need to be replaced?

The Digitizer is the clear part that handles the touch input for the device

Generally its the Digitizer that needs to be replaced and not the underlying LCD - but you won't be able to tell until you get the old digitizer out

I just (week before last) had a Samsung Galaxy 3 repaired at Quest Wireless. They quoted me $179 for the repair. Luckily, I had purchased a Squaretrade Warranty and they covered the entire repair after my deductible of $99. They had my money back to me the same day I forwarded the receipt from the repairs.

Phone looked as good as new and I sold it on Ebay for $200 two days later.

How much did you pay upfront for the square trade warranty?

FWIW, they told me most people do not repair their uninsured Samsung Galaxy
phones due to the cost. If the digitizer is damaged then the phone is basically fried without a repair. Most broken screens will need that repair and it is expensive.

I'm guessing you had your S3 for a year or more. If you purchased it in March of '12 you paid $109.25 in monthly fees and then another $99 for the deductible for the repair that cost $179?

I don't purchase them or any other warranties, but I do put money into a savings account each month.

We got the free* upgrade in Jan 2013. We paid the insurance since then. When we got the phone and insurance the S3 was still the newest Galaxy so prices for S2 parts would have been higher as would the cost of the phone. If I did not have the insurance I likely would have eaten the loss and not repaired it. As it was I still made a small profit on the phone when I sold it. Nothing like I usually make when I sell my phones in mint condition with the transferrable ST warranty.

But all things considered I feel fortunate to not lose money on the phone. The sale of the phone helped finace my new S4 while my son gets my old S3. Also warrantied.

Without the insurance the phone stays broken in the drawer.

My daughter dropped her Ipod touch a few months back and completely shattered the screen. We took it out to mission repair (they are on the west side of Olathe on 162nd street). It was a bit of a drive, but they replaced the screen and had it ready to go in 24 hours, looking and working like it was new. I was very pleased with their service. It does say on their site that they do repair S4 screens, the price was $249, so it looks like they are competitive price wise with the quote you got earlier. Good Luck!

FYI... Apple has a flat rate repair system for all their models. It's much better than 3rd party places for most of their devices. And in the large majority of cases, they do replacement instead of repair, so you would have gotten a brand new one most likely...

Mission Repair did it for 69 bucks, apple was 99 or 129 to fix as I recall, and she would have been without it for awhile, so I was happy with what we got.

So you'd rather pay $11.50 a month for the warranties and then a $100 deductible than chance a $179 repair fee?
