Compensatory picks in the Dorsey era vs. the rest of the NFL.

Dorsey has been GM of this team for four full offseasons (2013-now), making this upcoming offseason his fifth.

Including this year, he has also had the ability to earn compensatory picks for the Chiefs for four years (2014-now, since he couldn't have earned any in 2013).

So what I've done is compiled two lists that apply to the NFL since 2014.

The first (on the left) is the sheer volume of compensatory picks for every NFL franchise since 2014.

The second (on the right) weights every one of those picks, roughly, by value.
  • I awarded every 3rd round compensatory pick 5 points to the team that earned it.
  • I awarded every 4th round pick 4 points.
  • I awarded every 5th round pick 3 points.
  • I awarded every 6th round pick 2 points.
  • I awarded every 7th round pick 1 point.
Like I said, not very scientific. But interesting:

A couple insights:

As usual, the teams with consistent, long-term front offices that aren't completely rebuilding their rosters get a ton of picks. Ozzy Newsome really is a draft master.

Cleveland, however, is the exception to that rule. They get a ton of high quality picks despite the fact that (a.) they're terrible, and (b.) they cycle through new HCs and GMs every year it seems.

Teams with frequent leadership changes are often times on the bottom of both lists. Typically they bring in new GMs and HCs who want to turn over the roster (a lot like Dorsey did in 2013, which is why we didn't have a single compensatory pick in 2014).

Under Dorsey, Chiefs are the only team that have earned more than one 3rd round compensatory pick.

Do we get one for Foles, I wonder? Or does declining his option basically mean he's a cut.

Good question, I'd think it probably means he's cut.
