How would YOU try to improve the defense?

Amid all the hysteria over our two wins and offensive performances, I'm just wondering what can realistically be done to improve the defense? Now we know Berry will hopefully be returning soon which should be massive, but with the way this offense is looking, just a slight improvement on defense could take us to the promise land yall. So does Veach sit, be patient and hope Berry is enough to improve things? Should he get on the phone and beg Breeland to join the kingdom? Or should he seek to make a trade of some sort?

I think I'd probably go with trying to get Breeland in and with Berry added to the mix I think the unit would be vastly improved.

...Breeland...Berry...Parker...Fuller...

With Nelson In the slot. Surely that would be enough?

This is a minimum 2 full offseason rebuild, and that's if we dedicate a lot to it (which I'm assuming we will...not many holes on offense). We need literally two starting DL, 2 rushers and an entire secondary. Literally 4 goddamn starters.
On this, we absolutely agree.

To add, obviously a 4-3 makes more sense with a new DC. We don't have any ****ing personnel for a 3-4. Every project DL guy we take isn't suited for either 34 DE or OLB. Tear it down, build around Jones as a DT and Hitchens as our MLB. 34 has basically never worked for us, ever. We've always been terrible against the run and similar vs the pass outside of Houston's monster season.

this is true while it's possible that some of the young-uns may develop. Still; what they're doing ain't working. Why not at least be aggressive?

We should have been heavy on getting corners, safeties, and pass rushers that don't run 5 second 40s. Everytime I see Speaks, I think Veach might not know what he's doing.

It's really hard to say. The problem is veach went grocery shopping for probably the wrong cook. If Reid and veach wanted to get bigger, then go out and get a DC who will get your team to play bigger. Instead we're forcing big guys into nickel dime all the time and these guys are shitting the bed with tackling which reflects on coaching. Either veach is right and he has the wrong DC, or Sutton is right and veach should have loaded him with DBs.

Unfortunately I think we all know ths best solution is to can Sutton and bring in players to suit that new defense. I just hope we didn't pigeonhole ourselves into a scheme because we started rebuilding this year. I just don't understand the thought behind keeping a 70 year old DC who struggled last year when it was a perfect perfect opportunity to bring in a fresh face.

The “right call” is the one that had no impact on the actual play and lead to a 14 point swing.

Ok

You don't think Reid, Veach, and Sutton are on the same page regarding what type of personnel they want? LOL

I think Reid defers a lot of defense to the DC, and Sutton can't adjust to the way the game is going. It's not like this is the first time Reid has had a struggling DC. I like what Sutton has done for us in the past, but he looks just plain lost. And blaming talent can only take you so far.

The players have to make plays. Fire Sutton, don't fire Sutton. It simply doesn't matter and it won't make a bit of difference until the 11 guys on the field get their heads out.

Ok
Penalties get called all the time that have no impact on the play. The rule book doesn't allow you to just ignore it because it didn't matter. The ref also doesn't know in the moment that it doesn't matter.

Look I want to see a replay as much as anyone. If it's a crap call then I'm all for the cries of foul. But the argument that it didn't affect the play has no impact on defensive holding decisions and it shouldn't.

Nobody has actually seen the play to know what the right call was.

I disagree. I think they're much more successful when they're aggressive than when they're not. First quarter and fourth quarter today, for example. They ate us alive in between.

Not sure the draft will help, because apparently we don't even play the guys we draft (O'Daniel, Speaks).

Yes and no. I just think a big part of the problem is not putting guys in a position to be successful.

It's true that there are problems with tackling and the secondary is suspect. I don't know why we are relying on them then to cover for 8 seconds at a time.

It's cool, we just disagree.
