Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

I watched 127 Hours last night. In case you don't know, It's about Aron Ralston and his amazing survival story about being trapped in a Utah canyon. He was pinned by a boulder and a wall and the only way out was to sever his forearm.

Wow, what a movie! My initial assumption was, "how can they make a movie about a guy stuck in a wash without screwing it up?" Man, was I wrong.

James Franco did a good job of putting you there, in Aron's place. The flashbacks his character had were pretty surreal and hard to watch at times. Trying to imagine being in that situation was hard to stomach. Could I amputate my arm like he did? It's hard to answer that not being in that situation, but the movie sure puts you there.

Checking out IMDB on the flick I saw this piece

Aron Ralston broke into tears during a Q&A session at the Toronto International Film Festival, after an audience member asked his opinion on his portrayal on screen. Ralston said it was challenging after he was comforted by the actors beside him.
What an amazing story of determination and hope, I highly recommend!

Tremendous movie...this and Black Swan were easily my two favorite movies of 2010. Probably followed by True Grit and The Fighter. Best way I can really sum up 127 Hours...you have no idea how strong you truly are until being strong is the only option you have left presented to you. I recommend this movie as well. Also make sure you check out the other three I mentioned if you haven't already. All great movies really!

It's amazing what people can do under certain conditions. Having that strength to achieve the near impossible feat can sure separate the men from the boys in a short time. That sound they used in the movie when he was cutting the nerve through his arm was chilling. I literally had goosebumps and could barely watch the screen.

I've seen the other movies you mentioned too. Black Swan wasn't quite my cup of tea with the whole ballet thing but since Darren Arnofsky was directing it I knew it was going to have some twists I couldn't fathom missing without at least a look at the film. I don't know much about the Ballet "Swan Lake" but I found the movie helped explain it. The plot of the ballet seemed to mirror her real life, great writing. I've also enjoyed his past movies, "PI" and "Requiem for a Dream". Both these films are in my collection and were very visual and engrossing.

The Fighter was more than I expected too. I thought, "o boy, another boxing movie. He wins in the end, I know where this is going" Yet Christian Bales performance is what made the difference to me. He played such a ****ed up charater flawlessly, he should be nominated for Best Supporting Actor with his role of Dicky.

True Grit was a fun movie, I like most of the Coen brothers stuff and was not disappointed. I've never seen the John Wayne version nor read the book so I didn't know much going in. The 14yo girl playing Mattie was excellent, I hope she gets some good roles in the future. Jeff Bridges can play a drunk pretty well Seeing him stoned and burnt out in "The Big Lebowski" to a egotistical, fall down drunk was funny.

I saw a post for "A Serious Man"(Coen movie I havn't heard about) and decided to check it out. I was impressed with it. The Coen brothers sure can make their dark comedies pretty damn funny.

The Academy is going to have alot of hard decisions coming up with the nominees, and eventually winners, of the top awards this year. Such a good year for movies!

I had the same thoughts. At first, I thought some of the editing and things were over-the-top cliche but as the movie progressed I saw what they were doing and appreciated it.

Boyle knows what he's doing. And cutting that tendon was chilling.

With Nicole Kidman? Yeah, that was kinda freaky. Cool flick, though.

Finally watched both Robocop and Universal Soldier last night. I'd never seen an unedited version of Robocop. I will give Verhoeven credit for making the violence uncomfortable, simply because of the sadistic nature of the characters perpetrating it. I say that as someone who loves Hard Boiled and Equilibrium.

Yeah, the scene where they shoot the guys hand, then arm off, and then systematically shot him to death was pretty brutal.

I miss Paul Verhoeven's gratuitous violence and visceral filmmaking. He always delivered shock value like no one else in Hollywood.

Why'd he stop making movies?

Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct (which I finally saw a year ago), Showgirls, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man....all awesome.

I think I'm gonna check out some of his early work. Flesh + Blood sounds like a PV film.
