2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Anyone who thinks the Royals are going to overhaul starting pitching is crazy. Our rotation will have 4 of the same 5 guys we see out there every day.

Hoch – “he just needs to work on consistency”

Chen – he’s signed up for another year at a pretty significant salary, and you’ve got to be crazy to think
Glass will waste a dollar, so he will get the Davies/Sanchez treatment.

Guthrie – “we haven’t even really seen what he can do yet”

Mendoza – “he really saved us last year and showed us something, we have to give him another chance”

Fighting for the 5th spot will be Adcock, Odorizzi, and Mazzaro.

I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. Prepare for another 90+ loss season.

I'm not expecting wholesale change. But to actually see a Royals fan SUGGEST they should sit pat... yeah, I went kaboom on him. Which is not something I do often on message boards.

I actually have no problem with bringing back Mendoza, Hochevar and Chen. Those types of guys are fine at the 4/5 spots in the rotation. Especially Hochevar (who I'm done expecting anything more out of but who has been at least acceptable as a back-end guy of late).

Chen, I think is more effective if he's not being asked to stretch out as much (5-6 inning limit). Though I am worried at this point that Bob McClure was the Chen whisperer.

Mendoza has been fine as a No. 4/5 guy. He's missing more bats at the ML level, which was the question for him.

Those guys aren't the problem (though Chen has been pretty bad, especially of late). The problem is not having anybody in front of them to fill the higher level spots.

Like I said, not expecting wholesale change. But they should be bringing in at least 2, probably three guys (Even if a few of them are short-term options). They're not going to do it. So unless Dayton Moore gets lucky as f***, we're going to be ripping him for the next year. While fans stay away from the K.

Wasn't Aaron Crow drafted (what, number 2?) to eventually evolve into a starter? From where I'm standing I'm not seeing any evolution. Draft bust?

I think number 9 and since he is an okay reliever in the majors I wouldn't call him a bust. He just isn't what they hoped he would be.

They got Crow at 9.

His inability to develop a consistent change-up pretty much makes him a bullpen arm. Fortunately, he plays up as a great bullpen arm (and potential top-notch closer).

There have been so many pitchers that don't even give that type of contribution at the big leagues, I think it's hard to call him a bust.

So, Arguelles went 7 yesterday giving up just 2 hits and a walk and struck out 5. That's like his first good line since, well, he had surgery. Hope?

So a poll of managers on which players had the best tools yielded the following Royals related results. They are separated by league:
Fastest Baserunner - Jerrod Dyson #3 in the AL
Best Defensive 1B - Eric Hosmer #3 in the AL
Best Defensive 3B - Mike Moustakas #3 in the AL
Best Infield Arm - Alcides Escobar #3 in the AL
Best Outfield Arm - DMJR #3 in the AL

Surprises: No Salvy in best defensive catchers, No Esky in the best defensive SS or best bunters

Ask Moreland and the Rangers if Esky deserves to be up there as defensive SS.

Awesome. Frenchy strikes out on 3 pitches after Peavy walked the first two batters in the first inning.
