Chiefs looking to Trade down

Chiefs | Looking to trade No. 1 pick?
Mon, 25 Feb 2013 07:36:51 -0800

The Kansas City Chiefs are seeking to move out from the No. 1 overall spot in the NFL Draft regardless if they acquire a quarterback via trade, according to multiple league executives.

Maybe in the Lions headquarters it was. But there were discussions amongst Stafford, Sanchez, and Curry at the very least going to the Lions from the pundits at one time or another.

Maybe this is all window dressing here too! Joeckel, Warmack, Jones, Star... but in the end it is/was Geno all the time.

ESPN.com draft analyst Todd McShay, for example, said recently the Lions face a "nightmare" decision because Stafford is "not mentally ready" to take on the pressures of being the No. 1 overall pick. McShay said that scouts from at least 10 teams agreed with that assessment and added: "I just don't feel great about building my organization around him."

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock told a Detroit radio station that "there are some things about him that bother me," and even Stafford's biggest supporter advocates with a negative argument. Yes, Mel Kiper Jr. said the Lions should select Stafford primarily because "there is nobody else to take."

If he's the 3rd best prospect in the last 5 years (behind only Luck and RG3) there should be tons of teams and tons of talk about teams moving up for him.

It's hard to view these guys to old prospects, cause we know the end product.

To claim that Geno Smith is just a hair shy of Stafford's standing as a prospect is misguided. I desperately want us to draft the guy, but I'm not going to blind myself that drafting Smith is legitimately a reach.
I have to ask. Where is Smiths deficiencies compared to Stafford? Besides a little arm strength what's the difference? IMO Stafford was a little over rated.

Don't laugh at ME on this. I am never an advocate of either philosophy being the gospel. I have always said, different years, different drafts dictate different strategy. Here's how I have always looked at it:

1- If you are an established team with no obvious holes ==> Draft BPA (maintenance mode)

2- If you are a totally starting from scratch team ==> Draft BPA

3- If you are a few positions away from being an established team ==> Draft for positions

The article that I got it from has an interesting formula that calculates the success a college QB might have in the NFL based on 3 different stats. I'm deciding on whether to start another thread about it....because I'd have to go back and calculate the past 3 years worth of QBs to see how it truly works out. Maybe I'll do that on my lunch.

Funny. I remember the Lions having Curry and Sanchez in for visits, and the pundits talking up the Lions taking them at #1.

Like I said, it could have all been window dressing.
