Hardest Video Games All Time

I have been going on a nostalgia tour of NES games played right on the console. No save states, no cheats, just hard-core, kick you in the balls gaming.

What are the games that caused you to swing the controller by the wire like a medieval mace, bringing it down upon the floor reducing it to an explosion of plastic shrapnel?

Let us know the game, what parts of the game were brutal, and the notable reactions the impossible scenarios summoned from deep within.

I just got done playing Castlevania.

Grim Reaper level right before meeting him. Holy balls mother ****er. I nearly smashed my nes controller, promptly fired up the emulator and save stated through the last stretch.

**** this game with a cactus.

a lot of old games are mentioned here. two of the harder games I have played are both recent titles. Salt and Sanctuary is very hard and is a metroidvania game. some people compare it to Dark Souls. Exanima is a very tough game and it is still being developed. I have put 500+ hours into it and I still don't feel like I have mastered the game. that is even though the game is still pretty short because it is unfinished.

Exanima is physics based and has a control scheme similar to Mount and Blade. the really cool thing is you can perform one-hit-kills with most weapons but your stroke has to be perfect. upgrade weapons and the 1-hitter-quitters become more common.

WoW seems hard. I know people who have played it for a decade and they still can't finish it off.

Back to Castlevania on the NES hardware.

I can get by the hell hallway to the Grim Reaper without getting hit 95% of the time, but when the sickles fly I am ****ed.

Got him half way down on energy, but can't sustain. The sickles are just a bitch.

Its less to do with how hard it is and more due to the fact they constantly are pumping out new content with a higher gear treadmill to match. Its like dangling a carrot in front of a donkey.

Only made it to the Reaper a few times playing it back in the day and that seemed like a massive achievement just getting there.

This. MMORPGs are really not meant to be "beaten" if the creator keeps pumping out new content. Blizzard has been good at it, as well as SOE was with Everquest 1.

Hey guys, I was just joking. I wanted to drop a post to subscribe to the thread, but I don't really have any "hard game" stories to tell.

I haven't played it in a long time but I thought Super Mario Brothers - The Lost Levels was a really tough game.

DOOM, the last Sun smiley faced boss that spit fireballs on level 9.

Doom (typeset as DOOM in official documents)[1] is a 1993 science fiction horror-themed first-person shooter (FPS) video game by id Software. It is considered one of the most significant and influential titles in video game history, for having helped to pioneer the now-ubiquitous first-person shooter.

Doom was played by an estimated 15–20 million people[3] within two years of its release, popularizing the mode of gameplay and spawning a gaming subculture. In addition to popularizing the FPS genre, it pioneered immersive 3D graphics, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for customized additions and modifications via packaged files

Joust is a hard game Damn forgot about that one.

Asteroids stole a bunch of my quarters.

Just so you know:

The quarter, short for quarter dollar, is a United States coin worth 25 cents, one-fourth of a dollar. It has a diameter of .955 inches (24.26 mm) and a thickness of .069 inches (1.75 mm).

Digital Crack....as all computer games are. It is about entertainment. So are TV, books, Football (now a football thread), painting, playing the piano. How do you want to spend your time?

I read that and immediately thought of evil Otto. Berzerk is a very hard game. two teenagers dropped dead after playing it back in the early 80s.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berzer...opular_culture

Quote:
Berzerk is the first video game known to have coincided with the death of players. In January 1981, Jeff Dailey made the Berzerk top-ten list after posting a high score of 16,660 points and suddenly died of a heart attack at age 19 a few seconds after the game was over.[12] One year later in October 1982, Peter Burkowski entered Friar Tuck's Game Room in Calumet City, Illinois and made the Berzerk top-ten list twice in fifteen minutes. Astonishingly, he collapsed just a few seconds after the game was over, before dying of a heart attack at age 18. His high scores are unknown
are there any other games that are so hard, people lose their lives playing it?
