You sign Houston this offseason and you can likely get good value on that contract. After these new deals have emerged, that is far less likely. Not to mention that they've put themselves in worse cap situation with that atrocity they gave to Smith.
Most of the time I'd agree wholeheartedly.

However, Justin Houston is gonna ask for the whole farm and won't budge from his demands to be the highest paid at his position in the league.

Don't forget that he was the last guy of his rookie class to sign his rookie deal because he wanted more than the slotted value his deal was worth.

No way was he gonna sign a value deal unless the value was "highest paid OLB in the nfl"

IMO they need to pay the man. Even if that means paying him as the premier OLB in football.

How about this season, you ****ing jackass?

Zero sacks. Zero.

That's not Chandler Jones-bad, but it's pretty bad.

Still waiting for Houston to crack the 11 mark and even get close to Quinn's 19 from last year.

Everyone looked at the OL and WR and knew that the team would struggle this year. Instead of having Smith play out his $8 MM contract on the good chance with a tougher schedule that he'd have a worse year, he signs him to a deal that guarantees him $45 million.

When Houston is coming off an injury-shortened year and before contracts for players like Watt and Quinn come up, he elects to wait on Houston.

If he had been proactive with Houston and taken a wait-and-see approach on Smith, the team would have been able to secure a young foundation piece and not hurt itself with an onerous contract for a middling QB.

Instead, he did the exact opposite. Dude is a ****ing clown.
Dead wrong. Dead. Wrong.

Alex Smith wanted Tier 1 money. Dorsey got him down to a "middle class QB" deal by doing nothing but waiting for the season to begin, and the Chiefs can essentially walk away from Smith almost every year under the contract.

Houston, on the other hand, held out for his ****ing slotted rookie deal, over a difference of tens of thousands of dollars. Houston is currently asking NOW for a ridiculous deal. Injury schminjury.

I'm not 100% thrilled with Alex Smith being signed longterm and the oncoming contract throwdown that's coming with Houston. But Dorsey's calculations were correct. We negotiated with Alex Smith when we had maximum leverage, and are probably going to have to put Houston and his ri-****ing-diculous contract demands on the tag.

Bingo.

Houston has become the vocal leader of the defense and that's a spot you'd like to see him continue to grow into.

Build the defense around him, Poe and Berry

Is he?

Poe, Hali, and Abdullah seem to be leading the emotional charge on the field.

I agree on Berry, but of course Berry's not on the field as of now.

Having played sports for many years myself, I just always put an emphasis on on-the-field leadership, since that's where emotions swirl the hardest.

Poe, Hali, and Abdullah/Berry really seem to be the players everybody rallies behind. Houston seems to be growing into that role, however. I don't know, just watching how the players react to each other on the field.

O.city is my emotional leader.
