St. Louis Rams waive wide receiver Austin Pettis

The St. Louis Rams invested six picks between 2011-2013 at the wide receiver position, all in the fourth round or higher. They've struggled to find consistent production from them.

The team waived receiver Austin Pettis Monday after more than three years with the team. He was taken in the third round in 2011, with receiver Greg Salas taken a round later. Salas was traded to the Patriots two years ago.

Pettis averaged 31.6 catches in his first three seasons with 11 starts. He struggled to carve out a big role from the slot and was inactive for the team's win over Seattle on Sunday. The Rams still have Brian Quick, Chris Givens, Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey remaining from their recent draft haul.

We'd expect Pettis to find a job at some point this season. It wouldn't be a shock if the New England Patriots took a look at Pettis; offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was in St. Louis when Pettis was drafted.

For all the jokes about Dorsey going dumpster diving for his key role players and (sometimes) starters, I'm shocked how many people want him to do it again for this guy.

Oh wait... they saw a couple Boise State games when they were good, so NOW Austin Pettis is suddenly this valuable WR who just needs time to realize his potential.

I see.

Meh. I don't care one way or another, but I'd take him over Jenkins, not that that's saying much. And it's mid season, so there aren't going to be any additions that aren't from dumpster dives.

If you think he's better than Jenkins, sign him. There's no reason not to.
If Reid thinks this guy has the mental capacity and drive to get up to speed on the WCO quick enough to contribute this year, fine, sign him for one year on a peanuts deal.

But he was kicked off the Rams for missing a meeting, I've never heard of a team doing that to someone who's missed 1 meeting... its most likely a result of various boneheaded things this guy has done. That makes me doubtful he has the work ethic to come in here and soak everything up fast enough to do anything this year.

For all his faults, Jenkins knows the offense. So does Hemingway.

Those two factors make them more valuable than Pettis at the midseason point. It'd be different if Pettis had a shit ton of talent like Justin Blackmon or someone like that. But he doesn't, so therefore... turd.

Not if they suck.

And they do.

If the Chiefs have the worst receiving corps in the league (and there's an awfully good chance that's the case), then what are you when you are the worst receiver on the worst receiving corps?

Jenkins sucks.

Avery sucks.

Bowe sucks.

At least Hemingway can play on special teams.

Bring in Pettis.

It's almost a guarantee that he's going to be better than at least three guys on our roster at the WR position.

Question, SNR...

The Browns offer Josh Gordon for Eric Berry. Do you bite?

The Jags offer Justin Blackmon for Eric Berry. Do you bite?

I would start licking my lips on the Gordon trade. I don't know if I would bite without knowing more about Gordon's contract situation as well as the penalty for another incident.

Blackmon is the kind of player I would be pounding the table for us to claim off of waivers, but only because he's on waivers and it doesn't really hurt us to give him a shot. I'm not trading Eric ****ing Berry for a dude who is literally in rehab right now.

That being said, Blackmon has more positive vibes for the locker room environment than Austin Pettis has talent on the football field. So there's a CLEAR difference between those two.
