Trump to name all of Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

Do we have anybody on this board that has been claiming for a decade that Israel and America actually never wanted to establish a two-state solution, and instead were paying it the silliest lip service possible while greater entrenching Israel as an apartheid state and precluding the existence of any kind of meaningful Palestine?

Anybody?

Let me see if I can think of one.

U.S. to Recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital, Trump Says, Alarming Middle East Leaders
By MARK LANDLER and DAVID M. HALBFINGER
DEC. 5, 2017

President Trump told Israeli and Arab leaders on Tuesday that he plans to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a symbolically fraught move that would upend decades of American policy and upset efforts to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Mr. Trump is expected to announce his decision on Wednesday, two days after the expiration of a deadline for him to decide whether to keep the American Embassy in Tel Aviv.

Palestinian officials said Mr. Trump told the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, that the United States would move the embassy to Jerusalem. Jordan said the president gave a similar message to King Abdullah II.

American officials, however, said such a move could not occur immediately for logistical reasons, given the lack of facilities to house the embassy staff. As a result, Mr. Trump is expected to sign a national security waiver that would authorize the administration to keep it in Tel Aviv for an additional six months.

Still, Mr. Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital — and to set in motion an embassy move — is his riskiest foray yet into the thicket of Middle East diplomacy. Arab and European leaders warn that it could derail any peace initiative and even ignite fresh violence in the region.

King Abdullah II strongly cautioned against the move, “stressing that Jerusalem is the key to achieving peace and stability in the region and the world,” according to a statement from the royal palace in Amman.

“King Abdullah stressed that the adoption of this resolution will have serious implications for security and stability in the Middle East, and will undermine the efforts of the American administration to resume the peace process and fuel the feelings of Muslims and Christians,” the statement said.

Few details of the conversation between Mr. Trump and Mr. Abbas were released, but a P.L.O. spokesman said that the call had given shape to the worst fears of Palestinians — that the United States would break with decades of practice and longstanding international consensus by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The Palestinians hope to make East Jerusalem the capital of a Palestinian state, and the city is of great religious significance to Jews, Christians and Muslims.

“It’s very serious,” said the spokesman, Xavier Abu Eid. “Things look very bad.”

The Palestinian news agency, WAFA, quoted Mr. Abbas’s spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, as saying that Mr. Abbas will continue his contacts with world leaders to prevent such “unacceptable action.”

King Abdullah also spoke with Mr. Abbas, assuring him of Jordan’s support for the Palestinians “in preserving their historic rights in Jerusalem and the need to work together to confront the consequences of this decision,” it said.

Mr. Trump, officials said, assured Mr. Abbas that the administration would protect Palestinian interests in any peace negotiation with Israel. He also invited the Palestinian leader to visit him in Washington for further consultations.

In his phone calls with Arab leaders, Mr. Trump is making the case that settling the question of the American Embassy could actually hasten the peace process by removing a thorny political issue that recurs every six months.

But that is primarily a political problem for Mr. Trump, who promised during the 2016 campaign to move the embassy. His pledge was extremely popular with evangelicals and pro-Israel backers, including the casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. They expressed frustration when Mr. Trump signed the waiver in June, keeping the embassy in Tel Aviv.

Middle East experts said the administration’s argument that it could not move the embassy immediately made little sense, since all that is required is to place a sign on the existing American consulate, declaring it the embassy.

For Arab leaders, word that the United States would formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital had already caused great consternation. The symbolic statement of the embassy’s change of address, many officials warned, was actually less damaging to the peace process than changing United States policy on Jerusalem’s status.

For the United States to move the embassy would break with international consensus that the status of Jerusalem remains unsettled.

Though Israel houses its parliament, president, prime minister and most ministries in Jerusalem, and Israelis overwhelmingly want the world to acknowledge the Holy City as their seat of government, the international community recognizes de facto Israeli sovereignty only in West Jerusalem.

East Jerusalem was captured by Israeli forces during the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. And the permanent status of Jerusalem as a whole, East and West, was postponed under the Oslo Accords, although Israel extended Jerusalem’s municipal borders to encompass the predominantly Arab eastern neighborhoods.

This is being done in response to the anti-Israel shit the UN pulled recently. It's like they exist for the purpose of bashing Israel at this point. Nations committing active genocides don't get that much attention.

This is not happening in a vacuum, and Trump isn't an authority to designate anything a capital in Jerusalem anyway.

Yes, he did campaign on moving the embassy.

Well, he mentioned it. It wasn't exactly a major issue.

It's still happening at this particular moment for a particular reason. You're nuts if you haven't noticed Trump's tendency to walk back on promises.

It's a central issue of the Republican Party, actually, which has created a de facto merger with the Likud.

Trump Plans Waiver on Moving U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem
By Nick Wadhams, Margaret Talev, and Jennifer Jacobs
December 5, 2017, 11:42 AM CST

President Donald Trump will sign a waiver delaying the move of the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv while declaring the contested city the capital of Israel, according to a person familiar with the decision.

Reports that Trump would unilaterally declare Jerusalem to be the capital and begin moving the embassy there fueled warnings from Middle East and European leaders saying it would undermine peace efforts and potentially generate protests across the region. The president is “pretty solid in his thinking” on the issue, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said, and will make an announcement Wednesday.

The president’s decision to sign the waiver would be in keeping with moves by his predecessors going back 20 years under a federal law that declares an undivided Jerusalem to be the Israeli capital.

Trump called Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah on Tuesday to tell them of his decision. Both governments said Trump told their leaders that he intends to move the embassy, though no timelines were provided. The White House announced the calls, but spokespeople for Trump did not immediately confirm the Palestinian and Jordanian accounts.

While many details about what Trump may announce remain vague, both Abbas and Abdullah warned the U.S. president against moving the diplomatic compound, their governments said, with Abdullah saying it would “have serious implications for security and stability in the Middle East” and will “fuel the feelings of Muslims and Christians.” Trump also plans to call Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry expressed its “deep concerns” about the potential move, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a NATO ally, threatened on Tuesday to cut off ties with Israel if Trump goes forward with the move.

‘Red Line’

“Mr. Trump, Jerusalem is a red line for Muslims,” Erdogan said in a speech at parliament in Ankara on Tuesday. “This could lead us to break off our diplomatic relations with Israel.”

Like many presidential candidates before him, Trump promised during his campaign to enact a 1995 law that calls for the U.S. embassy to be located in Jerusalem. The law allows presidents to postpone the move by issuing a waiver every six months, and all of Trump’s predecessors did so out of concern about the strategic consequences.

In a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee as a candidate, Trump promised to “move the American embassy to the eternal capital of the Jewish people, Jerusalem.” Once in office, however, he moderated that stance, saying in an interview with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee that he wanted to give peace a shot “before I even think about moving the embassy to Jerusalem.”

It’s not clear how long an actual move of the embassy would even take, or if such an announcement would rule out a Palestinian role in the city. The person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing internal deliberations, said moving the embassy would take some time because the building would need to be constructed first.

No Groundwork

Dennis Ross, the former negotiator on Middle East peace talks who served three U.S. presidents, said that while most participants realize Israel will always have control over the western part of Jerusalem, the Trump administration hasn’t laid the groundwork for announcing such a big decision about the city as a whole.

“If you somehow move to prejudge this issue then you make it impossible for them to proceed on peace and there’s always been a worry of -- will there be some kind of violent reaction as well,” Ross said in a briefing to reporters. “If you want the Arab states to play a role they will have to be in a position where they can say that the final status of Jerusalem can only be resolved through negotiations.”

The State Department sent alerts to embassies and consulates in Muslim-majority countries last week warning about possible unrest linked to an announcement. Ahead of the president’s decision, the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem barred government employees and their families from “personal travel in the Jerusalem’s Old City and in the West Bank, to include Bethlehem and Jericho,” according to a Twitter post. The post cited “widespread calls for demonstrations beginning December 6” in those areas.

Going forward with the move could yield domestic political dividends for Trump with many American Jews and evangelical Christians at a time when about 37 percent of Americans approve of his job performance, according to Gallup.

“It is, in fact, the policy of the United States, as codified in federal statute, that our government recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel,” the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America said in a letter to Trump on Tuesday. “Jerusalem is the spiritual center of Judaism and has been the only capital city the Jewish People have ever known.”

Peace Negotiations

While Israel considers all of Jerusalem to be its capital, the Palestinians desire to place the capital of their future state in East Jerusalem. Only two other countries recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel -- Costa Rica and El Salvador -- although both countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv. The United Nations has said the city’s status must be settled in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Abbas warned Trump that moving the embassy would imperil his effort to restart peace talks, which has been led by his son-in-law Jared Kushner and his Mideast envoy Jason Greenblatt.

The Saudis on Tuesday called the expected move “unjustified” U.S. bias that disrupts efforts to revive peace talks, and cautioned it could have “grave consequences.”

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hopes that the U.S. administration does not move forward with it; so as to not comprise the ability of the U.S. to continue in its effort to achieve a just resolution for the Palestinian People,” the kingdom’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

French President Emmanuel Macron told Trump on Monday that the prospect of a unilateral declaration concerned him, and also reiterated that the city’s status must be resolved through peace talks.

On Sunday, White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told Fox News he didn’t know whether Trump would move the embassy, though he did say doing so could be used to create momentum to broker an agreement.
