School Pulls White Boy out of class for "Blackface" MLK costume

A white Colorado second-grade student who wore black face paint as part of a Martin Luther King costume has drawn criticism from school officials.

Sean King was pulled out of class Wednesday for the costume, which was for a project requiring dressing up as a historical figure.

The Colorado Springs boy says he was trying to honor the slain civil rights leader. His parents knew about his costume and came to watch the presentations.

Blackface was common in minstrel shows in the 19th century and featured white performers playing stereotyped black characters.

Steve Klein of The King Center in Atlanta tells KRDO-TV ( http://bit.ly/KqIxqM ) the youth apparently had good intentions.

But he says Sean and his family need to understand some people are still offended by white people wearing black face.

There have been many atrocities domestic and globally that have lasted waaay too long, when men like yourself could simply CARE.

You don't care to see it from anyone else's viewpoint but your own. That doesn't work. I don't even think you're trying to see it from the kid and his families viewpoint. You're resting on yours and yours only. That helps no one.

But it is my fundamental belief that certain things cannot be ignored lest they turn into a bigger problem. Ive seen it before. The world has seen it before. It doesn't turn out well

He he... when I was a teenager, I dressed as Hitler one Halloween. Complete with swastika arm band, Hitler haircut and mustache. It was actually a pretty impressive costume. And for the record, I'm not a white supremacist by any means, and despise what that evil **** did. I was simply dressing like a human "monster".

Needless to say, I was unprepared for the emotional reaction from the older folks in the community..... Didn't go over well at all.....

I think that most everyone doesn't want to ignore certain parts of history... I think that most are ready to get past the hurt and anger that came from those dark times. (no pun intended) It becomes an issue of what kind o attitude you are going to pass on to the next generation.

Will you teach them to respect their elders and the difficulties they endured so that you and your kids can have a better life? That they should love their fellow man regardless of skin color? That these horrible things happened 60+ years before their classmates were born and we should not hold those sins against them?

Or will you teach them that because people many generations before their peers did horrible things to your ancestors, that they should be treated with mistrust and suspicion? Will you teach them to focus on the negative things and hold on to all the anger of past generations?

It is one thing to teach your kids that ignorance and stupidity still exist via racism and prepare them to deal with it. It is another matter completely to instill fear and anger as a coping mechanism to the stupidity today and the bloody history of their lineage.
