Let's make this a poll.

I personally have always been more partial to defense. I think a great defense is like art in motion. An offense can be powered by a great quarterback or an elite player here or there, but a great defense requires an orchestration from all parts that an offense doesn't always require. Sure it helps if the left guard cut-blocks the defensive end on the far side of the field so that Jamaal Charles can have an additional tenth-of-a-second darting towards the opposite side of the field, but a great defense requires 11 moving pieces.

In that sense, I enjoyed the 90s Chiefs more than the 2000s Chiefs, the lopsided-defense teams over the lopsided-offense teams.

I've loved the development of this defense under Pioli and Crennel. We have the best and deepest defensive line this team has had since the days of Dan Saleamua (sp?). Our passrush rivals Allen/Hali from the Herm Edwards days. And our secondary is one of the very best the NFL has to offer.

It's been a bit anticlimactic for me, however. When I watch the big-ass defensive line required by a 3-4 defense, what position holds more fascination than the nose tackle?

You're talking about a humongous brute, whose sheer size is so great he lines up directly over the center with the intention of simply pushing the guy back by being big. He exists on a very small (but crucial) part of the field, and is bigger than everybody else, stronger than everybody else, and on the best defenses, more ferocious than everybody else. We're talking about a guy so big that he creates injuries by simply falling on people.

It's like an invulnerable superhuman, and it just fascinates me to watch it. So little movement all over the field compared to everybody else. Yet the things happening between the hashes, going up against the heart of an offensive line built to punish defenders, totally outnumbered and outgunned, are among the most important on the field.

We finally got one. And he is not small, and he is immensely gifted. 6'4", 350 lbs. He's among the strongest the league has to offer. Among the fastest the league has to offer.

I wasn't thrilled about the pick, but in a way I'm glad we got him. We finally have a player who does things like this:

And you absolutely have to love the primal scream about :33 in when he's getting close to 44 reps...

You see the guys on the sidelines lighting up. It's magnetic. It's something no other position can really do for your defense. It colors the entire defense.

No particular point to this thread. Just a meditation on defense, the nose tackle, and Poe.

It's too easy to hate on this guy, folks. Let's get the positive mojo going.

The fans at Arrowhead have been castrated with the lack of D the last several years. It's so dishartening to shout your lungs out on 3rd down only to have the D give it up time and time again. I believe those days are over though so next time I'm at Arrowhead I'll be yelling DE-FENSE!

The 49ers lost, but I wouldn't say they were overmatched. Punt returner might have been overmatched. And this is not the Jets, but the Ravens were not overmatched against the Pats this year either. Coulda/woulda/shoulda won late.

Defense = 1990's
Offense = Today

I MUCH preferred us setting records of offense. If we had any balance at all during DV's tenure, we'd have 2 rings right now. Problem w/Marty's teams were they get down by 14, it was game over. I never want to experience that hopelessness again.

And therein lies the problem with Martyball. If the ball bounces poorly ONE TIME (Heaven forbid it happens TWICE) you lose.

While I like offense more, the Pick 6 is the most exciting play in sports. In a close game, it's the most drastic emotional swing possible.

Of course the combo of the Vermeil O (with a prime franchise QB in Green) combined with the 90's Smith and Thomas D would be all world, But I have to go D. At least the D could also score points. That was just awefull knowing that we had no hope in a shootout of stopping anyone from marching on us. That D however could have a bad game and then suddenly grab a pick 6 and shut it down!

Winning. I like winning. I spent too many of my younger years watching the Patriots plumb the very depths of extreme suck. I like to win, and I don't care much how they do it.

When I am at Arrowhead-its Defense all the way. Nothing gets the crowd fired up like Big Plays and Crushing hits. We have lacked both since DT left us Way too soon. Jared Allen filled some big shoes but in one of the WORST moves in football history-they let him walk instead of paying him. We could have had the best sack combo for years. Hali has been Amazing, he just does not stop. Does any player in rescent years have a Bigger heart than Hali-don't think so-plays hurt, he is a warrior!

As for Poe- I have read a lot about him-came from a single parent home-brother in jail for drugs and guns-was teased mercilessly as a kid. I think he has a Lot to prove to his naysayers and has a lot of ghost to put to rest. I think he took a huge step dominating the Combine like he did.

As for production in college- doesn't sound like he had caoching or descent players around him. Good news he learned a lot of different postions and played a Ton of downs-bad news-didn't play Nose Tackle a majority of those plays. Personally I like the Kid and hope he makes us forget all the Bust picks we have had on the D line. Maybe he even makes Dorsey and and Jackson better. Especially Jackson since he wont be double and tripled teamed-LOL he will be free from eating blocks to maybe make a tackle or sack once in awhile.

Poe just might be the Big Stud we have been waiting for since Allen took his roping routine to the Vikes??

Chiefs had the leagues best defense for much of the 90s and had nothing to show for it because the offense was pedestrian. When you get to the playoffs the other teams are pretty good too. We could never overcome that. The Vermeil years we had the league's best offense and couldn't even force a punt in a playoff loss. The Giants were not the league's best offense or defense. They had a solid team that came around when playoff time came. The Pats had the best offense in the AFC but no defense. You need both in this league. St. Louis Rams "Greatest Show on Turf" won one Super Bowl, lost another and were afterthoughts from there on. The '85 Bears won one Super Bowl as did the defense laden Ravens and Bucs because they were not balanced teams.
