Identity Theft

I got nailed, I assume in the Equifax thing.

Tuesday morning I'm checking my email and notice one from a credit card provider saying the new card I requested is on its way. Except I didn't request a new card. And I certainly didn't request that it be sent to ****ing Pittsburgh.

So I call them, and get the card cancelled and reissued. No damage done, no money spent. They ask me to provide a security word for any future dealings. So later in the day, they call me back - the brazen prick has called in asking why "his" card isn't working. So at least this is stopped.

I changed all my login names and passwords that I could think of, and alerted LifeLock as to what was going on. And sure enough, this afternoon I get an alert from them saying somebody has applied for a Discover card in my name. Again, it's stopped, but obviously there's some shitbag thief out there who has my name, birthdate and SSN. I can only hope that the rapid responses to these attempts will discourage him for further attempts, and he'll move on to somebody less vigilant. But that doesn't change the fact that my info is out there, and if he doesn't stop, God only knows what else is being done in my name.

Of course I asked for the address the card was sent to - the squeaky-voiced Indian robot-sounding bitch from the credit card company wouldn't give it to me - she just rattled off some happy horseshit about how they're looking out for me, even though I was the one who identified the problem to them. I also assume the cops won't do a damn thing about it even if I report it.

If anybody who's been through this crap has any words of wisdom, I'd appreciate it.

Oh, and thank God for LifeLock. Wasn't sure if it was a waste of time/money when I signed up a few months ago, but clearly it was the right call.

Put fraud alerts on your accounts if you haven't already. If you don't need credit in the near future, I'd freeze your credit immediately. Check your credit reports multiple times per year. You get a free report from the 3 bureaus each year so request one every 4 months from the different ones.

And stop buying porn!!!

Thanks. I haven't called them yet, but I'll add that to the list of things for tomorrow. I'm also going to to talk to the finance lady at work, ADP and the company that handles my 401(k).

Luckily, they haven't got anything out of my bank account - I'm checking that about once every two hours.

I'd rather not say. Except that the one thing I like about Muslim culture is the way they deal with thieves.
