2018 Paid Media Consumption

Purely out of curiosity, I was wondering what kinds of media people are using these days. I read a stat the other day that over half of U.S. households are paying for at least some form of streaming media these days, so it'll be interesting to see how CP compares.

I've had DTV out several times in the past 15 years and each and every time, they tell me that the previous installer "incorrectly mounted the dish". It's probably a touch off due to heavy wind and rain this year but it's an absolutely pain in the ass to get to these days.

I should probably call them but I also cancelled the monthly insurance because I only have a single DVR now and satellite, so I don't know if there will be a cost involved.

To be honest, I'm really sick of DTV and the constant customer service calls I need to make each year in order to lower the bill and such. Even though I deactivated 4 receivers back in 2015, they failed to deactivate one of them and charged me for 14 months before I caught their error.

They're really a bunch of no-talent assclowns.

I cut the cable this year almost completely. Other than Google Fiber internet, I'm good.

This will be my first year without Sunday Ticket in over 10 years.

I'm a true cord-cutter. I only have an OTA antenna with a Tablo so I can record any program of interest. I can't even keep up with all that recorded content.

My Rokus are nice because it offers a bunch of free movies and other options.

Content is a real problem for me and why I truly cut the cord. ESPN is horrible and why has the Travel Channel turned into Andrew Zimmern 24/7?

I must admit I signed up for Sling TV Orange (Dish Network) this month for March Madness. It was $20 and is already cancelled, so it will be disconnected in a couple of weeks.

DirecTV full boat, Netflix, Prime (never watch it), Spotify premium. I don't watch much tv or movies and 99% of what I do watch is recorded so I can ff if needed. HBO Go on Roku is good for that.

I installed my dish myself and it can be a bit time consuming to fine tune it so it wouldn't surprise me that most techs don't want to fool with it. And their superiors are probably pushing them on how much time the spend at each call. Sucks that you can't get to it yourself because it's not difficult, also helps to have a second person to watch the meter on the TV screen.

Pretty interesting results. Around a third of us are cord cutters (no cable or satellite TV). Four in five have Netflix, which doesn't really surprise me. I'm a bit surprised by Amazon Prime, though. I have Prime, but I rarely actually watch any video on it. Hulu's abut where I would have expected. They just don't seem to be able to get the value proposition right.

Pretty surprised by Amazon Music being so high. That has to be Alexa-driven, right?

Live sports suck on Direct TV satellite, even with zero clouds and wind. My signal jammed and pixelated all weekend when watching the NCAA Tournament.

I've held on to Directv the lastb4 or 5 years solely because of the Sunday Ticket. I have to be able to watch the Chiefs. This season, though, I noticed that every Sunday when I switched over to Directv for the game, the tv was still tuned in to the channel I had watched football on the previous week. So, I wasn't using it at all during the week. Since I had no problem streaming some of the games at work this year, I decided to cut the cord. I asked the rest of the family if they could live without it, and they had no problem with me getting rid of it.

Our contract ends in June, and the guy knocked our monthly hit down to $70 just to keep us until then, because I was ready to pay the cancellation fee to get rid of it in January.

So, this will be my first NFL season with no Sunday Ticket.

Amazon Prime is probably high simply due to the fact that most people have the accounts already, so they figure why not use the streaming service as well, since it's free.

I've watched maybe four things on there in the last year, but I voted for it in the poll. I wouldn't sign up for the streaming service on its own, and I would assume many people that voted for it in the poll are in that same boat.

Just trying to guess why the numbers might be surprisingly high.
