Mizzou fans need your opinion

If the Broncos are in fact eyeing Lock - what's your take on him?

This is what CBS has to say:

Quote:
10. Denver Broncos
Drew Lock, QB, Missouri. Some look at Drew Lock and see Patrick Mahomes. Others see Paxton Lynch. Or Jay Cutler. Or Josh Allen. Or even Matthew Stafford, by our own Chris Trapasso. Which comparison is closest? The only thing that matters is what Broncos brass sees when they look at Lock, and we know they are in fact looking, with John Elway recently scouting the Missouri quarterback. The Broncos decided to pass on Josh Allen and Josh Rosen last year, but I think they take the plunge at QB in the 2019 draft.

Denver is the last place I want to see Lock go, because I would actually like to root for him and that will be impossible if he is in Denver.

Mizzou seems to have become a hotbed for developing NFL backup qbs. I don't anything that changes this with Lock.

Nah, that's not entirely fair. The 'Lynch' stuff is way off; Lynch didn't have the drive to improve.

Lock has shown exceptional aptitude and coachability despite several coaching/coordinator changes while in college. And he's shown improvement in key areas every year.

Physically, he has slightly above average NFL arm strength and slightly above average NFL mobility. He doesn't have a true downfield cannon but is definitely capable of throwing solid deep shots. He's not Mahomes off platform by any stretch but he's able to throw amidst a maelstrom.

Physically he's not dissimilar to Carson Wentz; very comparable in terms of raw arm strength and mobility; probably a half-step under in both.

Where he's really lacking is just his general feel as a passer. He isn't a great touch passer and sometimes isn't willing to take what's available to him (again, very much like Wentz).

His downshot reminds me very much of Ryan Tannehill. If his development is poor but not non-existent, Tannehill is who he becomes. If his development is good, there's Carson Wentz potential there. And if his development IS non-existent, you have Paxton Lynch. I simply don't see that happening. Lynch was a flake that didn't have the head on his shoulders to be an NFL quarterback. I don't see that happening with Lock. I think your range is somewhere between a below average NFL starter (Tannehill) and a fringe top 10 guy. Out of last year's class I'd take him ahead of Rosen but behind Darnold (though not as far behind Darnold as many others see him).

In a bad QB draft, if you're a team needing a signal caller, you could do worse. If I'm Denver, I wouldn't be building shrines to him or anything, but I wouldn't be crestfallen either.

Yeah I maybe shouldn't have voiced my opinion - I only had a small sample size. I'm pulling for the guy - unless he lands w/ Denver. ha

Denver is not that place.
Dalton lacked Lock's baseline athleticism and I think that's hugely undervalued. Athleticism is what allows quarterbacks to save a play that's gone off the rails. It doesn't necessarily mean he's going to break the pocket and run for 20, but rather that he can still make a throw while moving and without his feet perfectly underneath him.

If you get Dalton off his spot, he's finished. And while Lock is no Mahomes in that regard - nobody is. Lock is going to be more capable of saving a play than Dalton was. Dalton was a glorified AJ Green JUGS machine. Lock may not make it to that point if he can't get a better feel for passing (just knowing when/how to feather a ball in there and improving on his ball placement), but if he does, his physical tools are better than Dalton's.

That being said, the Mahomes comparisons are ridiculous. I think his best case is a Matthew Stafford type player, as others have alluded to in this thread. Tall guy, with a big arm and not much mobility.

If he goes to Denver we have nothing to worry about.
It's just such a different analysis for college quarterbacks since so many of them are expected to be like Kyler Murray and truly make plays with their legs. That's not what most teams are looking for at the NFL level. It's a bonus, not a requirement.

I think you're understating his mobility. Lock had offers from Oklahoma and Wichita State to play basketball as a shooting guard. Now I think Oklahoma's offer was more to try to snipe him for football, if I'm being honest, but Wichita State's program is very good and they were just after him to play basketball.

If he's the stiff you're portraying him as, he's not getting offers from NCAA tournament teams to play hoops.

Don't sleep on his athleticism. He's not 'dual threat' style mobile because that's just not his game, but he's not some lumbering oaf back there either. His feet were an oft-underutilized element of his game and when they were made a bigger part of his arsenal, he tended to play better.

I really do hope Denver drafts this mutt. I want to watch them continue to flounder for the next decade with Blake Buttholes 2.0.

He's not Bortles. As I noted earlier, he's much more Matt Stafford. I also see the Wentz comp, although not quite as refined or ready to start out of the gate, IMO.
