Amazon announces Fire TV

Amazon has dove in head first into video hardware, announcing it’s new set-top device: Amazon Fire TV.

Clearly a competitor for Apple TV and Roku, the $99 device is an internet-connected set-top box which uses voice commands that you speak into its remote control. It will also serve as a gaming console, and consumers have the option to purchase a separate $39 controller that is paired with the box.

Amazon has claimed the device is 3 times more powerful than Apple TV and is based on Android and HTML 5, which means it should be easy for companies to bring their apps over to the platform. It supports Hulu Plus, Netflix, Pandora, Youtube, Crackle, iHeartRadio and Vevo. Sadly, HBO Go and Vudu are not supported.

Fire TV also has a predictive engine called “ASAP,” which pre-loads content it thinks you are going to watch, so it can start without any buffering or load time. This feature learns over time and gets better at suggesting content you like.

In a prior announcement made this weekend, Amazon said it will be turning six shows from its Amazon Originals program into a full series. The shows, which were selected after viewer feedback from the pilot episodes, include ’The After’, ‘Bosch, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street’, ‘Mozart in the Jungle’, ‘Transparent’ and ’Wishenpoof’. Amazon also renewed ’Alpha House’ — starring John Goodman — for a second season.

As far as gaming is concerned, the console will offer titles such as “Minecraft” and “The Walking Dead”. Many of the titles will be free or cost a little as $1.85 to play.

I was going to say. with root access you could have android mount an "sd card" that is actually your usb.

Either way, the Fire TV gets better and better. Anything to kill the China made boxes that are muddying up the XBMC community.

FYI..... after some experience now with the Amazon Fire TV, I can very confidently say that this is the best affordable XBMC solution available, hands down. I have been nothing but impressed with it. Flawless smooth navigation and playback. And compared the the AppleTV2 that I replaced it with, it is a night and day difference. I was shocked at how much better it ran than the ATV2. Everything feels so much more accessible and centralized.

Getting it configured the way I have it wasn't a simple process. Mainly because the device is still in its infancy. But all the info you need is readily available from several websites. It took me about a day to get it exactly the way I wanted it. And this will continue to get better and better as this device grows up.

I can't recommend this enough if you're looking to cut the cord.

God I am sick of my 1st Gen Apple TV running linux. You cant go through the file system without an ssh terminal. Stutters even at the start of 720p videos.

Any ideas on an XBMC box with component 1080i output? Short of building a small PC with an old ATI GPU, I am stumped.

I'm really starting to wonder if xbmc is really worth all the hassle. I'm having tons of trouble with buffering on it now. I have no problems with any other video service, aka netflix, amazon, vudu, cinemanow. But I can't seem to watch anything on XBMC anymore without it buffering for 5 minutes or more.

I am having the same conflict on recommending XBMC as well, but for a different reason. People using XBMC use to be so helpful. Now they are just so shitty to each other. I cannot recommend XBMC to someone and expect them to be helped anywhere in the community. It is just so toxic now.

Which box do you have? The streaming add ons are so hit and miss. Right now, the youtube addon is the bane of my existence. However, on my HTPC xbmc's, playing torrents are working amazing.

Picked up a Fire TV last weekend to replace my loyal but aging Boxee Box.

Love it. XBMC streams flawlessly. Emulators work very well. Access to Amazon Instant Video (remastered ST:TNG!) and Hulu Plus is very nice, something I didn't have with the Boxee.

Would recommend.

edit: also, those having trouble with XBMC streaming, try using NFS instead of SMB. It's a way more efficient protocol. Hannewin NFS is a good server for Windows. It takes a little configuration but there are a ton of tutorials for it.
