Star Trek Into Darkness plot revealed

Star Trek Into Darkness plot revealed - villain is a one man weapon of mass destruction

Quote:
THE first plot details of "Star Trek Into Darkness" have gone online, sending fans into a frenzy of speculation.

The sequel to JJ Abrams' popular reboot of the classic TV series has been shrouded in secrecy and, up until now, all fans could safely say about it was that Captain Kirk and crew were back and that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch was the villain.

What villain has been the subject of intense debate, with many fans hoping for Khan, the genetically engineered warrior who provided the original "Star Trek" its best movie, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan".

Here's what the official synopsis has to say on the matter:

"When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

"With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

"As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew."

Now, in the original series Khan had a cunning mind, great pecs and super strength but you couldn't safely describe him as a "one-man weapon of mass destruction".

One original series character who does fit that tagline is Gary Mitchell, a former starfleet officer and close friend of Kirk who gets god-like powers and goes nuts.

Abrams likes surprises - he destroyed Vulcan the last time around - so it's unlikely he reveal Cumberbatch's character until closer to the film's release date, May 16 next year.

Maybe the trailer attached to "The Hobbit" will shed some light.
