Covitz:Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’

Former Chief Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’

Cornerback Brandon Flowers may have lost his job with the Chiefs, but he didn’t lose his self-confidence.

Flowers, who was quickly signed by AFC West rival San Diego last week, 11 days after his release by the Chiefs, blew his horn pretty loudly in an interview with NFL Network last week.

Here’s an excerpt from that interview with Flowers, who last year made the first Pro Bowl in his six-year career, though he had been moved from left cornerback to a slot corner early in the season.

On who’s the best cornerback in the NFL:

“First off, let me must say, I am the best corner in football. Don’t let my injuries last year fool you and take my name from that top list. One guy whose game I definitely respect throughout the years was (Darrelle) Revis. Coming from a system that he played in, it’s a lot of man-to-man being played, him shadowing receivers, and he definitely put in that work. Not to say anything else bad about the other corners, but Revis is definitely a corner I respect in this league.”

On how he felt when he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs:

“I was very surprised when it happened. I knew I hit the cap pretty hard, but I thought if I was going to get traded or released it was going to be in February or March sometime. The timing that they did it, it kind of hit me. That’s why I stayed in the division. I wanted to let the Chiefs know that’s why they hit me. I want to let them know how I felt about it.”

On his familiarity staying within the division affecting his decision:

“That made it comfortable. I also respected San Diego playing them throughout the years (and) how they run their organization. I always had respect for their players. It’s always hard fought, tough games when we played San Diego. I always sit on the other opposing side that I would love to play for a guy like Philip Rivers. He’s so fiery. He’s always got that attitude. He’s got that ‘want to.’ You can’t ask for nothing else from your leader. I think it’s the perfect match for me.”

On his favorite thing from Kansas City and his favorite teammate:

“My favorite thing about Kansas City was the fans. It felt like I never left college playing for Kansas City. No matter if we were winning four games … it was still crazy. You go to the malls, and everyone had on red. It was crazy. The fans were definitely my favorite thing about K.C.”

“As far as teammate-wise, Derrick Johnson and Jamaal Charles were both my boys. (I’ve) been teammates with those guys for years. Off the field, we were always together. Those are my two. I can’t pick one over the other.”

This... when healthy he's a damn solid player.

But I'm still not sweating his loss, really looking forward to getting some size/speed prospects out there in this scheme... aint skeert.

The rules **** the CB so you must have pass rushers and good safeties. Period. The $ needs to be spent on Houston and Berry. Especially if Ford works out.

It is what it is. Flowers should have stayed on a restructured deal which I am sure they tried to work out. His ass got greedy.

Not sure how this evolved into a debate of comparative positional value.

This started because of the manner in which Marcellus dismisses corners in the first post quoted here.

gonna be fun watching him lock up with our receivers. If Bowe doesn't beat him a handful of times, we all know Donnie Football is good for one deep ball a game.

The Ravens Super Bowl run was made with a decent secondary. Their #1 CB, Webb, was out with a torn Achilles. Reed was declining. Corey Graham and Cary Williams started, and both were pretty good nothing special. Pollard was the big hitter but coverage was meh as usual. Pass rush is far and away more important. Seattle was in Peyton's face every play otherwise he would have lit it up..

Colts/Chiefs playoff game was on NFL Network tonight. I don't remember hearing Brandon Flowers name called. Did he play in the game?

You're an idiot. It's been stated multiple times that, although our defense was starting to give up yards and points while he was in, the flood gates were completely opened when he left the game.

I only had the stomach to re-watch the first half of that game, but he had an INT while the Colts were driving before halftime and also ran straight into about three pulling offensive linemen, causing Trent Richardson to change directions and try to move the ball to the other hand where Tamba was able to strip it.

I'm not an idiot I just don't remember him in the game.

Then again, you're not a Chiefs fan that actually thinks Reid/Dorsey are trying to win games this year are you?

He was the one covering Ty Hilton. A name you didn't hear until Flowers left.

I like this. There are some Flowers fans on this board and I like that. Not saying he's a disaster at all. I'm a bit on the fence myself about him.

Well if you just watched the game today like I did and you didn't notice him then you weren't paying very close attention, broskino. He played for most of the playoff game and he played well..

I'm sorry for the insult, though.

So in the last 4 posts I've read "until he left the game" and "he played most of the game".

Which is it?
