Shameless is awesome. William H Macy just shines as the dad in that show. He is the perfect scumbag. I need to eventually get through it all, I think I am in season 3 right now but god I love it.

He is a special kind of scumbag too. I think it was the second season when he doesn't tell the lady waiting for a heart on the transplant list that she got the call for a new one. Did it just so he could get her money when she died. Just ****ing rotten.

I enjoyed the first couple seasons of Shameless. Fell off after that but not because of the show. Just lost track of it.

That's really missing the forest for the trees.

The scene wasn't about not being able to afford a store bought cake, or being too lazy to make one at home.

The scene was about jabbing the corporation that took over the local grocery in the eye. They took out the checkers and put in scanners, so Roseanne plays along the charade. She mimes scanning, then has the little girl 'boop' like the scanner, and heads out the door. She figures if the store doesn't think the customer is worth paying a cashier, and their products aren't worth decent security, then they're not going to miss her walking away with free cake. It's not about 'stealing' in the sense that they're grappling with right and wrong. It's about reacting to a store being so apathetic about what is going on that walking out without paying is simply a decision.

Even that little paragraph is overanalysis. But your response was so far off the narrative track that the 'joke' needed explaining, even if it destroyed the joke as well in the process.

It just keeps getting better. There's one season that isn't as good as the rest. One of my friends didn't feel that Macy was being used properly and bailed after a season or two. They've really done a much better job with Macy over the past few seasons
