Encouraging news on defense

Idk if Spags is gonna work out, but I’m really happy that him and the staff are working with these guys a ton on 1v1 fundamentals.

It feels like a huge part of our problem on defense last year was confusion, scheme design and players not doing basic things well.

Not trying to nitpick, but 1v1 fundamentals really doesn't address scheme confusion, no? This is the NFL - fundamentals like that by the DC himself shouldn't be necessary? I dunno. Maybe they are just wanting to start from scratch and build a rapport with each guy since there are so many new faces, coaches, schemes. Not saying it's wrong, I honestly don't have the expertise to say. It's just good to hear football talk.

Not only do we have guys who've forgotten what fundamentals are. We're going to be asking our players to do entirely different things. Stunting, delayed blitzes, etc. Our defense needs boot camp. Hopefully the fans will be patient. I think spags scheme usually takes time to get it right because it relies so much on timing and coordination. But what good are those things if our players can't even execute the basics.

Also, what I'm most excited about is the impact spags has had on DB's. His track record as a DC has been inconsistent. But his track record with DB's is outstanding.

Letting each man know that despite massive rule changes in the league, YES it is legal to use both of your arms when tackling.

Not sure if this is a good place to put this, but over on https://www.chiefs.com/ there are a couple of press conferences from yesterday, one from Frank Clark and one from Darron Lee, that were pretty good listens.

Did Ron Parker know he was even allowed to use 1 arm to tackle?

There are 2 parts to your question. First, fundamentals. Good grief, we were lousy at them last year. Whiffed tackles, improper footwork, and just wrong first moves were rampant. If it takes the DC to show someone how to tackle, so be it. The 2nd question, scheme confusion, may be like a 3rd grade play - you stand here and run there. It may take the DC, all the staff, and a few bystanders on the street to babysit that many players.

They've only had these guys for a few days. The scheme will be a rolling process. As for fundamentals, not all coaches are created equally at identifying and communicating a technique. Not saying Sutton didn't know fundamentals, but he may not have been actively coaching them. If Spags sees something he wants a player to do differently, I am glad that he's taking the time to communicate it.

Also, a switch to the 4-3 will require some different fundamentals. For instance, the DL is now playing a single gap vs trying to play 2 gaps like in a 3-4. The LB's will have some different roles as well. Our DB's obviously needed some fundamental improvement related to what they can get away with in terms of physical contact. Some of our guys are switching positions.... Speaks to DT vs OLB.
