ILB Eric Kendricks, 6-0, 230, UCLA

The Chiefs probably wouldn’t mind scooping up any of the top three receivers — Cooper, White and Parker — or even Scherff, who figures to be a plug-and-play left guard. But all those guys are off the board here, and the widely-acknowledged first-round alternatives at those positions — Dorial Green-Beckham, Devin Funchess and Jaelen Strong at receiver and T.J. Clemmings, Ereck Flowers and Cedric Ogbuehi at offensive line — have question marks (for now).

But if the Chiefs address those positions with veterans in free agency, which might be the best option, given coach Andy Reid’s complicated playbook, that would allow general manager John Dorsey to take the best player at a position of need. Lanky Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes could be tempting, particularly with veteran Sean Smith set to hit free agency in a year, but inside linebacker is a bigger need right now, particularly if they fail to address it in free agency. Even if Derrick Johnson, 32, returns to his pre-injury form, this unit is in desperate need of young talent, and the best player on the board at this position is Kendricks, who a bonafide tackling machine who racked up a ridiculous 145 tackles in only 13 games this season.

Kendricks is not very big, so long-term durability is a concern, but his plus instincts, quickness and passion for the game would allow the two-time UCLA captain to be a plug-and-play, three-down weakside inside linebacker who can immediately help a leaky run defense. As long as Kendricks’ medical checks out, it would be a surprise if he lasts until the Chiefs’ pick in the second round.

He's played inside and outside, is very long and can move well in space.

Not really sure about the "time" thing either unless he is referring to nutrition and rest. Any more than 4-5 hours week with weights will likely result in over training if they are "natural". I'd also question the way a lot of guys spend that newly found free time and if it's focused on S & C for football in the off season when they are back home away from the team.

They don't get as much time "away" from the team as you'd think.

The nutrition part makes sense given the finances available. However I'm sure after talking to him you know someone saying "x player just needs hit the weights for a few years" is pretty silly given most have been hitting weights for nearly a decade already. It's more about the aging process of boys becoming men and eventually getting that "old man strength" than acting like these guys haven't touched a weight their entire life prior the being drafted and playing in the NFL.

The weight thing is just a huge pet peeve of mind. Probably because it's one of the few things I know shit about

Top tier college programs are more than a part time job for those guys.

Two of my best friends while I was at TCU were athletes (one football and one basketball).

They had mandatory team meals and they got free meals at other times as long as they went through the team avenue. They focused hard core on nutrition. The football team's strength program was legit as well.

It's not a time commit in terms of workouts, but in terms of everything else that goes along with college, such as classes etc.

I think alot of it is the physical maturity as bcd has menti9ned, as well as mental maturity of the fact that 8th now a job and you'll lose money.

Done yet? Good. It’s no secret the Chiefs need receivers, so I’m not going to bore you with the reasons why. But Cooper, White and Parker are all off the board here, and it’s not in John Dorsey’s and Andy Reid’s nature to reach for a second-tier guy at that spot in the draft. So what’s the best way to provide Alex Smith with another weapon? Give him another top-flight, young tight end.

Yes, I know the Chiefs already have Travis Kelce. I love Kelce’s upside, too — he’s already a very good player and he still has room to grow. But Anthony Fasano isn’t getting any younger (he turns 31 this year), and as you know, Reid loves his two-tight end sets. I had a discussion with Reid where he’s waxed poetically about his days in Green Bay, when the Packers terrorized defenses with two Pro Bowl-caliber tight ends in Mark Chmura and Keith Jackson. So yes folks, there is absolutely room in the offense for Kelce and a player of Williams’ caliber.

Speaking of Williams, I already liked him based on the bits and pieces I saw of him this season, but he jumped off the tape in my recent film review. As a redshirt sophomore, he flashed an impressive combination of athleticism, aggressiveness and ball skills (he made multiple sensational catches in the games I watched). He needs to refine his route running but he is an emotional player who gets excited after big plays and is a very willing and aggressive blocker (often blocking to the whistle), though he sometimes slips off blocks because of a lack of strength. But guess what? He’s still young — he only turns 21 this year — and still has room to fill out his frame.

Finally, Smith takes a lot of heat for fans and some analysts for not taking chances downfield. Well, if you’re in that camp, why not give him another weapon at a position he’s shown he’s willing to throw to? The Chiefs can’t reasonably get out of Alex’s contract until after the 2017 season, so you need to commit to giving him the pieces he needs that give him the best chance to succeed.

For the record, I’d still keep an eye on UCLA middle linebacker Eric Kendricks, who went to the Chiefs in my last mock draft and is still a first-rounder in my eyes, though small inside linebackers often fall to the second round. Also keep an eye on cornerback — I’m intrigued by Florida State’s P.J. Williams, provided he has the long arms the Chiefs like — and Miami of Ohio’s Quinten Rollins, a former basketball player who is raw but really gifted.

Lastly, I feel obligated to say I’m not crazy about the Chiefs taking the first-round receivers remaining on the board this early (Jaelen Strong, Devin Smith), though that could change as we go through the process. I need to see what kind of 40-yard dash Strong runs, and because he needs to improve his route running, I wonder about how he’d fit in Reid’s offense. I know Smith would fit — he’s an elite deep-ball threat — but he’s still raw in other facets of the game and is probably better suited to be a late-first or early-second-round pick.

Initial response to this is that this looks like a backup pick if the top 3 WR's and OL we want are gone.

With a top 10 caliber TE in Kelce, I don't feel like we need to use such a high resource on this position. I think we need a WR who can spread the field open horizontally in the first 20 yards to open up the middle of the field.

I would pick one of the ILB's before Williams, especially if McKinney is there.

No TD's by WR. Devin Smith is the pick in this scenario. Elite deep ball threat will open up underneath routes for kelce and a mediocre te to exploit.

Maxx Williams would be an excellent pick for the Chiefs especially since we are tied to Alex Smith. We use a ton of 2 tight end sets. Cut Fasnao use that money elsewhere. Two high level athletes at TE make more sense for this offense than a WR.

Bad "value" but a good pick.

The draft games have Maxx going in the first round, but my guess is this won't pan out once the combine is held as some guys will jump him.

All in all my feeling is he won't last to the Chiefs' second rounder they currently hold.
