Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

A totally awesome movie, Tom Hardy man... that guy IS THE TRUTH... many have tried to claim the "new brando" title, but they're pretenders.

He'd make Russel Crowe cower behind his rugby team, i plan to read the book its based on as soon as i can find it.
Is it out on DVD now?

I thought the "chems" angle was really cool, and is atleast partially based on real experiments and the fact that there were always more than one super soldier.

My biggest gripe is that Cross never went toe to toe with the super asian assassin.

Bet those ARE really good books, gonna have to look into that.

They're ****ing incredible. The amount of technology used/described in the book totally makes me think that either A) Our govt hasn't developed shit in the last several years or B) they have greater means of tracking us than we'll ever even fathom. I hope it is A.

The wife bailed on The Snowtown Murders nearly halfway through last night so I stopped it. I'm going to watch the rest of it today. It is certainly well made, very real, very disturbing.

I also watched Prometheus and enjoyed it. It's not the type of movie I try to poke holes in the story. I felt they did a decent enough job of mitigating the human element that typically cheeses out sci-fi for.

Seeing The Hobbit today this afternoon.

Watched Looper and Taken 2 last night.

Looper is pretty good.

Taken 2 ****ing sucked. Which was surprising because I really liked Taken.

Saw Les Miserables this morning.

Overall, I enjoyed it. But it's not without its flaws, the most glaring is Russell Crowe's Javert. Crowe's voice is mediocre on a good day, and the talent around him only accentuates this flaw. However, his acting throughout Les Mis sets a high bar and is the only thing that makes him bearable.

Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean is good, but not great, with Bring Him Home being his weakest spot. Sung full voice, there's a power in his prayer that was out of place.

Anne Hathaway turns in a good show as Fantine, and her performance of I Dreamed a Dream was outstanding.

Amanda Seyfried's Cosette was good but forgettable. Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen as the Thénardiers were perfect, and Samantha Barks gave a worthy performance as Éponine.

But the showstopper for me was Eddie Redmayne. With nearly a dozen showings of Les Mis in the theater under my belt, Redmayne blew me away in the best performance of Marius I've seen to date, and Empty Chairs was probably the highlight of the film.

I saw it this afternoon with my grandmother. I love Les Miserables, read the book when I was in high school, saw Victor Hugo's house and tomb this past summer, etc.

Leaving the theater I remarked that I thought everyone did a great job except Russell Crowe was completely out of place as Javert. He can't sing and didn't fit the role at all.
