Sushi

Do you like sushi and do you have a favorite spot?

I really like Haru's steak and sushi in Olathe on 119th. Their Las vegas rolls are the bomb. Tuna sashimi also.

Never dunk your rice ball in the soy/wasabi ..
Shit, yeah, that's what it is.

Damn, thanks for the heads up, but that makes sense. You'd have a soy dish full of rice after one dip.

Before I moved, I used to go to my favorite restaurant and order one of the variety sushi specials, and then order my regular meal. I'd eat the sushi for the meal and take home the ordered entree for a next day re-heat.

It's actually etiquette but it is also not considered bad manners to pick it up and eat it with your fingers... Lots of people do that

WTF? This doesn't make any sense. Why shouldn't people be eating it? It sounds like you're mad because it's popular, and that lessens the trendy and unique "Look at me" aspect for you.

It's food. Don't be such a pretentious bitch about it.
Sorry, but I am.

And food should be a lot more, especially sushi. In Japan, you have to apprentice for 10 years before you can be considered as a "sushi chef." There is a huge amount of knowledge that is required, from the preparation of the rice to the quality of the fish to the proper slicing and to the pairings of the fish itself.

And food itself is an art form. The texture, the taste, the smell, the visual, etc. There is so much that needs to be put into it to achieve a high satisfaction level in terms of addressing all the senses.

I don't mind that people are eating "sushi" in the same way that I don't mind that they go to Applebees or Olive Garden. If they are happy with mediocrity in their food, then it works for them. I just find that the proliferation of sushi joints over the past 10-15 years has diluted the quality and dedication to the art which made it popular in the first place.

Since this thread is about asian food, I'd like to use it as a platform to give a big **** YOU to Panda Express. It breaks the 3 rules I have for chinese food. I don't think I'm asking too much, but the rules are:

1. It must be cooked by Asian people. Not Puerto Ricans.
2. There must be more food than I can eat.
3. It must be cheap. A decent meal from this shithole is 8 bucks. With no leftovers.

You pretty much just destroyed sushi haters like myself. Hard to argue with that. However, I reserve the right to stubbornly adhere to my assholish, jaded way of thinking towards sushi even though I'm ridiculous for doing so.

Sac definitely approves of that post - as long as it was sincere.

I thought that the Director comment was quite apropos as well as the 20 somethings that are absolutely giddy just to be there and do the hip thing in helping to deplete the ocean of all edible fish.

I wonder what's next? Last time I was in Taiwan I contemplated ordering the braised donkey penis and shredded camel hump. I can just see it now, Midwesterners from Minnesota to Oklahoma are elated as the 27th new Donkey Dick establishment opened up in their town of 2300 people.

Personally, I think that bugs should be the next big thing. I cooked some giant Vietnamese hissing cockroaches for a Bear Grylls party two years ago, though I got overridden about the methodology in preparing them. Should have deep fried them tempura style and served them with a spicy peanut sauce. Oh well, there's always next time.
