The Motorcycle Discussion Thread

I figure there are some motorcycle guys/gals on CP, so I thought we could have a place to talk all things Motorcycles.

Tire Mount and Balance Prices (as of 10/29/16)

Prices based on if you remove the wheels yourself and bring the wheels and new tires with you:

Cycle Gear - $35 per wheel if you buy tires from them. $58 per wheel if you buy tires elsewhere
Rawhide - $65 per wheel (assuming it would be the same at other HD dealers. they book it at 1/2 hr per wheel)
C R Cycle Tires (DeSoto) - $30 per wheel

Cheapest I've found my Michelin Commander II's. Seem like they have good prices on other brands too.
http://www.jakewilson.com - Free 3 day shipping on orders over $75

Corny as shit presentation, but the guts/info are on point. I remember reading the first book via message board post on a Ducati forum back in probably 2001-ish. Someone had posted nearly the entire thing on a msg board. Even though most of the references and demonstrations are on the track, the same principles apply when you’re running through curves off the track. Great info on the geometry of a motorcycle, weight transfer, suspension characteristics, etc.

Though not a ton of technical curves in the KC area, it’s definitely something someone should watch and digest and practice /mentally, before going to some technical roads like you will run into in Arkansas (closest roads to KC etc); and something every motorcyclist should have a good understanding of.

Ducs are great bikes.
Be sure to check Maintenance intervals (valve check etc) though. That can get expensive.
I know on my Triumph the intervals are 12K, 24K and 36K. I did the first two by myself and have decided to skip the 36K because valve check was fine on the other two.

absolutely.
It's really amazing how improved the maintenance intervals have become since, say, the late 90s / early 00's on the 748's and 996's.

I think in the early 00's, the interval was like 5k miles, then it jumped to 7500 (which people rejoiced about lol), then around 2006-ish I think went to 12k. Now, I think the Multistrada 950 interval is like 18k. which is amazing to me (in a good way) considering where Ducati was just 17 years ago.

I plan on doing the check / adjustment myself if I get one. I prefer the 2v engines just for ease of use/check/adjustment, but I 'think' Ducati may have completely gone away from the 2v motors now and are using variable timed 4v motors. Maybe the scrambler/796 & 821 motors still use 2v....not sure. And, I really like the electronics on the newer bikes so I think my 2v plan is out the window now lol.

I'm still hurting pretty bad, but I am recovering. I really just miss riding. My road star is sitting in my garage, but I'm waiting til I can put wait on my leg.

Got back last Sunday from Bike Blues and BBQ IN Fayetteville, AR. Did about 1500 miles, and found a great route to take, that takes you east of the rally, and you can avoid a bunch of the congestion. We rolled for a good hour and didn't even see another car or bike. I'll try to remember to post it last if I get a chance. Definitely doing it agin. It's a longer ride down there, about 8 hours /360miles or so. But 360 miles down there is an all day deal, given roads, speed limits etc.

Washed, polished and waxed the bike yesterday. It was absolutely filthy..

Not this time, but yeah in the general area.

We tried out a route we’d been eyeing for the past year or so and it took us just to the East of Arkansas GC, coming up from the south in the Clarksville area via hwy 123, through to Sand Gap to Mt Judaea over West to Jasper etc. so we didn’t run 7 hwy this time, but we want to next time for sure. We came around east and to the north of it.

For any CPers who ride and have never been, Arkansas is Absolute must for riders. Especially from KC, it’s not too far and is 1000 times better than any roads up here. Both in terms of pavement quality and also stretches of road where it’s miles and miles of curves w/out ancillary side roads . Just awesome.

Not near quick enough. Especially with days like today. I guess I came close to losing my leg south of my calf. Trying to wean off the pain meds since I'm noticing some signs of withdrawal. Problem is when I'm active, foot, ankle, and calf start swelling. Doctors can't give me a timeline really. Lots of nerve and blood vessel damage. I'm going on 3 months of sitting with my leg elevated. Thank the maker for an amazing ol lady who has been catering to my every need. Making recovery a bit easier. I'll see if I can get some photos uploaded of the damage.

Dang! Heal up fast.

If you want a bunch of Motorcycle snobs critiquing your crash, sign up to this web site and go to the Face Plant tab.
Other wise just browse around. The Perfect Line and Motorcycle Myths is a fun tab, especially the Fail of the Dragon tab.

Hang in there!

Ah, they can critique all they want. Had a lady trying to turn across traffic to turn left. At 530 in the evening on 7 highway in blue springs. Bitch in the right lane waved her in as I was approaching and *lady* pulled right out into my lane. I had enough time to lean left I to the center turn lane, and she tboned me. Throwing me off the bike, but I think it would have been worse had I stayed in my lane and hit her fender head on. It was fun being conscious through the whole thing.
