I'm Fire Me Boy!

I got infections in my toes. After weeks and weeks of wound care treatment and tests, I went into hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy to stabilize.

They finally stabilized, but not before two toes on my left foot and three on my right were basically dead. So a surgeon cut them off three weeks ago - second and third from one; first, second, and third from the other.

A week later, I went into the ER with some bruising and redness that wasn't normal, and five days later they cut off my other big toe. So now I have two bunny shadow puppets on my feet.



The HBO seems to be working. Doc was "extremely pleased" today, which is a breath of relief for me. If these wounds don't heal, they'll have to cut further up on my foot/feet, and eventually I could lose the whole damn thing, which honestly scares the shit out of me.

So that's my latest, folks. Ask me anything.

Take care of yourself. Can you just have the toes and front of your foot removed as a precautionary move or would that be risky as well? Do you notice a huge difference walking around with a different toe set up? I've always wondered that.

Both. The diabetes is well controlled; my A1C is nearly non-diabetic normal. And it’s been well controlled for years.

Next step would be trans-metatarsal, which would be halfway up my foot. I could still walk with that.

There is a pretty noticeable difference between 2 big toes, 1 big toe, and no big toes. Balance is changed, and I’m learning things I can’t do or have to do differently. For instance, bend over to pick up something and notice how much of your weight is on your toes.

I was walking almost normally with one big toe. With none, I use a cane, mostly as a security blanket for me. I do find myself just standing and lose my balance a little, so it’s for that. The doc wanted me to use a walker, I didn’t want to use anything, so a cane was a compromise.

Probably won’t be much of anything. I’m double insured, and I’ve already met my out of pocket maximums this year. I’ve had so much this year that my meds are free now. I didn’t even know that was possible.

Feet injuries and wounds are hell for diabetics. They usually take a long time to heal too. Hope all this gives you a break for a while and you have no further complications.
