It's going to still require you to physically have the disc though. Whether it actually reads from a scratched disc is another thing.

Judging by this comment in the link above, the discs are unnecessary once it's installed on your HD:

Once you put the disc into your machine, you never need it again. If you want to keep it, that’s great. You can do that. But you can also download the game. You don’t actually have to have a physical disc after that point, but you can then share that disc with your friends which is basically a great way of distributing the content to other people

This still doesn't make sense. Doesn't really cover rentals and used purchases. It still sounds like if you purchase a used disk you will have to pay for it twice to use it.

That would be kind of stupid though. That would make the used video game market grow 500% and the sale of new games to shrink considerably. What's to stop me from buying a game for $60 today, downloading it, and then selling it for $45-50 tomorrow?

That is not what that conversation stated..

If the friend wanted to buy them game he could, as he already has the bits. It would just activate the game fully..

Which there could be a way to abuse this if it was cheaper.

Which technically, it should be cheaper as you are not paying for teh disc and case.

I also think there needs to be a lawsuit against all the game manufactures. They advertise you are purchasing games, not licenses.

I am going to assume they have some tech in the disc to register with the xbox or there will be a code. Hopefully on the disc, as that will get cracked. codes are a bit harder.

What is the difference between a buying a used game, or a rental & buying a brand new game? It's still a new game to the system regardless if it's new, used, borrowed, or rented.

Going off the quote here - he said that the same restrictions you have now will be the same restrictions you have on the Xbox One. The restrictions that are in place for the 360 (and I assume PS3) are that in order to play the game on a console, the disc has to be in the tray of the console you are playing it on, regardless if you download it to the HD. If you buy one copy, you can't play it on multiple consoles at the same time unless you have purchased 2 copies, etc.

My assumption on the difference between the 360 & One is that on One you can save it to the HD to a certain console and it validates it and you can play without the disc. But, if you wanted to play it on a second console (friends, etc) then you would have to have the disc with you. You can still play it just as you do now wherever you are.

So basically, renting a game or buying a game will not change the way you play. You can still play the full game while you have the copy. But, what sounds to be a cool addition, once you've returned the game if you decide you want to buy it, you simply "activate" it in some way and it's yours - without the disc itself.

I'm expecting them to give you X amount of cloud space and if you want more, you'll pay for it because it sounds like in order to play a game - even a rental or just a game that a friend brought over - you'll have to save it to either your HD or cloud.

That's my interpretation of it at least.

I absolutely hate the idea of cloud storage too. But hey, its M$. Whatever they can do to charge you more.

I disagree. I think it will kill the used game market.

They are pushing more to downloadable games rather than having physical discs. I think you'll see the used games (for Xbox One) being very minimal.
