Alex Smith Talks Progressing Slowly

Alex Smith talks going slowly, could pick up after the draft

Posted by Mike Florio on April 22, 2014, 5:30 PM EDT
Alex Smith, Cortez Allen
AP
Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith acknowledged on Tuesday that talks aimed at extending a contract that expires after the coming season are underway. And indeed they are.

But a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the discussions are moving very, very slowly.

The discussions could, and likely will, pick up after the draft. If/when an agreement is reached, look for the deal to have a value in the neighborhood of $14 million to $17 million per year. Which would be a very good contract for a guy who was the first pick in the 2005 draft and who was at times regarded as being a borderline bust.

Smith has busted out in a big way the last few years. While it feels like he’s been around forever, Smith still isn’t 30 years old.

That’s true. I checked. Twice. He turns 30 on May 7.

And he’s made plenty of money in the NFL over the last nine years. He could be making a lot more, soon.

Some people would much rather say "I told you so" than actually root for their team. Sounds like a female trait to me.

If this team goes 9-7, with the holes at FS, ILB, DE, guard, WR, and TE on this roster, then Alex Smith is a ****ing miracle worker.

, at the end of this upcoming season you idiots will be chanting for Bray (unless we draft Bridgewater)

I watched Smith ever since he was drafted. We traded 2 high picks for a Cassel clone. Enjoy your limited QB

And with the schedule we have. I think we may get a few (fingers crossed) players from last years draft step it up a little this year. But feel it's gonna be a rougher year as we kinda overachieved somewhat last year. But I agree, and in my opinion we were in some of the games later in the season when out D was exposed was because of A Smith. Smith isn't the prob with this team, they need to pay him, but not top 10 money. I'd say he's better than average but not elite. At least currently, maybe Reid can help him improve on his 2nd half of the season stats!

That leaves about 2m left unless someone else also signs an extension that lowers his cap number (Berry, Hali, etc)....that would mean Alex would be signing a contract that would have a low first year salary and bigger cap numbers in the future.

Not sure how I feel about that because if the total deal averages lets say 16 million and his first year only hits for 9, that means he would have to have a year or 2 with a cap hit near or above 20m.
They can make cap room anytime they really want.

That isn't remotely true.

Over the first 9 games of the season, he was exactly the kind of QB that many of us expected.
The safe risk averse game manager that didn't lose games for this team, with a couple of big plays mixed in.

He started to raise the level of his play over the course of the last 7 games and the playoff game.

What kind of fan wants their QB, who played very well the last half of the season last year, to be shitty this season? What kind of dumbass wishes his own QB plays shitty?

There is something seriously wrong with you.

It's exactly true

Alex Smith isn't winning, the defense is
Alex Smith can't throw deep
Alex Smith won't throw deep
Alex Smith can't score more than xx points
Alex Smith can't be aggressive without imploding
Alex Smith can't stay healthy

the goal posts kept being moved further back each time Alex Smith did something else that people said he couldn't do and now it's starting all over again

Alex Smith can't have another good year ............

That was the truth for the first 9 games of the season.

The first of those 2 assertions was off base, but the 2nd was the truth for the first 9 games.

You've always had a problem with reading comprehension, which isn't surprising, given your lack of ability to string together words into coherent sentences and paragraphs.

There were, and are, only a handful of people who didn't recognize Smith's progress over the last 7 games.

You present it as people moving goalposts week to week, and as a majority.

Neither are remotely true.
