How healthy do you eat?

When it comes to food, how much emphasis do you place on health and nutrition?

Poll coming as soon as I mix it with a nice quinoa.

I just made one in my NutriBullet—four organic carrots, half a blood orange, a few frozen chunks of pineapple, frozen banana ( I freeze them myself), fresh ginger and some mango, aloe vera, flax seeds, stevia and spring water. It was thick and filling with fiber. I normally don't use that much fruit, usually just half a banana and some pineapple which frankly goes better with the deep green leafy veggies which are nutrient dense.

I do a beet root one with some carrot, raspberries and some blueberries then the aloe, water, flax seeds and stevia.

Then I do my green smoothies with either kale or spinach, cukes, pineapple, aloe, flax seeds and water. Sometime banana or apple.

Sometimes when I have fresh produce around that's not being used up, to prevent it from going bad I toss that in.

Sometimes I use chia seeds too or coconut water. ( My body's blood profile loves coconut and it's so good for you.)

You got to use the real plants fresh and make your own if you want the nutrients and anti-oxidants.
I got in a spell for a while of making my own smoothies. I'd just use frozen fruit, yogurt, and a banana, and sometimes a little ice. They were really good. I need to start doing that again.

Did someone put a hex on you?

I don't do the yogurt in mine. You gotta do the deeply colored veggies, RainMan, for more nutrient density though. Like DaKCMan said, too much fruit is also sugar as is lactose in yogurt—tho' it does have probiotics which is good for the gut and thus your immune system—especially as you get older. Aloe and coconut are naturally anti-inflammatory.

And I forgot, I sometimes buy organic egg whites in a container and add that if I want protein added.

It was a laziness hex. I can't seem to find the antidote. That and I think my wife didn't like me leaving the blender on the counter.

I go to a salad place frequently. Put a bunch of fruit in a salad with a good dressing, and it's really good and also healthy.

Of course, the sad news is that I at some point figured out that I must have an allergy to spinach, because when I would put spinach in the salad it would mess up. Maybe some other type of lettuce too, which I'm still trying to isolate. It took a while to figure that out, and it's a shame that I can't eat a healthy food that I actually like.

I can't blame you for leaving the blender on the counter. They're a pain-in-the-ass for making a smoothie. Too much work to clean out afterwards. You should look into the NutriBullet as it's faster, simpler and easier. The unit is so easy to clean, with just a quick rinse. Lightweight and more like a large drink glass.

I leave the top section right beside the sink and it doesn't look bad at all. Looks more like a glass. Or you can just rinse it and put it away or back on the unit which takes up a lot less space. I just like mine to drain on a pad. Otherwise put it in the diswasher. I only run it when I have enough dishes though so it's not worth it.

Blender just discourages using it. I even put mine away in the garage I never use it anymore.

Salad bars sit under lights and that kills off the nutrition. Anyway, it's a matter of re-training your taste buds. From your list, those are probably dead by now. There's still hope always though.

You might have to do what some mom's do to children who are like you on veggies. Hide the cooking water by using it in gravies and soups.

C'mon, kale or romaine sitting on a salad bar for less than am hr or two isnt going to decrease its nutritional value. Besides, I dont even think Hy-Vees salad bar has lights that glare down on it.

They start losing nutrition the moment they're harvested and it continues through shipping, and store shelf life. Light as well as oxygen and heat too.
Ever eat spinach pulled right from the ground right away. It is incredibly strong in flavor, much more so than anything I bought in supermarket.

Cutting them too far in advance isn't good for best retention of nutrients either.

I have no idea how long they sit there at your Hy-Vee but I do know supermarkets are well lit...and I've been to Hy-Vee enough. Still better than nothing though. I eat at Sweet Tomatoes every now and then and their produce is under lights. I keep my herbs and spices out of light in my kitchen. I no longer use my old spice rack but keep them in a dark place. The ones left on that old spice rack had their color faded.

How Long Do Fruits and Vegetables Retain Their Nutrients

Already showed one in last post...but there's this too.
Quote:
Avoid slicing vegetables too far in advance. When we slice into a vegetable or fruit, we expose the cut surfaces to heat, light, and oxygen — the nutrient destroyers. Better to wait to slice foods until we are ready to cook and eat them.

Vitamix > nutribullet

And it's super easy to clean....and, yes, more expensive.

Or Blendtec.

A LOT more expensive. It does a whole lot more. You just don't need them though for a smoothie. Nutribullet also grinds seeds/nuts and makes nut butters too for a fraction of the cost and doesn't hog up counter space like the Vitamix.

Cost $99
Cost of Vitamix $400

Somehow I just don't see RainMan of Bill getting that into it that they'd need a Vitamix. Now if they were into making soups and ice-cream...perhaps.
