Democrats Circulate Plans for Control of Internet Including Regs on Political Speech

Like I said, InfoWars/Alex Jones was just the low-hanging fruit or the first domino. These totalitarians NEVER quit. Of course it's being done under cover to prevent Russian bots but we know that's just a pretense.
Senate Democrats are circulating their plan to take control of the internet.

The plans include mandatory location verification, mandatory identity identification, and disclosure requirements for political speech.

Titled “Potential Policy Proposals for Regulation of Social Media and Technology Firms."

Alex Jones was right? Didn't Obama hand the internet keys over to the U.N.?

The argument for keeping Alex Jones on all of the major platforms is that despite the fact that these are private businesses, their reach is so large that censorship becomes a violation of the first amendment. I don't see it that way, but those who are upset at Alex Jones being banned do and at the very least it's a legitimate line of argument. However if you're going to take that view, then it doesn't make any sense to be against the government also regulating these platforms to protect their citizens. Nothing proposed is even all that controversial. Why would you be against technology that is aimed at preventing bots from trying to influence public opinion?

I don't like Jones and don't care much for InfoWars despite them being right as often as a broken clock. But to start banning accounts for not only Jones but others for trumped up or even biased reasons is bullshit. It's a slippery slope and ironically we haven't heard, at least, of any left wing sites or accounts being banned. And we all know the LW has their share of InfoWars type sites and accounts.

"Survival of our democracy depends on banning sites". That's what a Democratic Senator tweeted.

Just think about that...he wants to champion democracy but shutting people up.

It's just that it's a reliable and frustrating dynamic. People oppose government intrusion. Government finally finds a foothold to intrude. Once they've intruded, they muck it up so thoroughly that the only 'reasonable' answer is . . . more intrusion.

Trade
Health Care
Speech
Climate
Internet

the list goes on and on.

Let's be clear about something first. Banning troll sites and bots good. Censoring legit people posting opinion... Less good. If a thing like this stays in the lane of ensuring legitimacy of content, that's fine and much needed. Definitely important to monitor how far out of that lane they step.

What are the left wing equivalents to Alex Jones? Be specific. This is the same guy who said Sandy Hook was a hoax which led to people literally going to the victim's houses and harassing them. Pizzagate, another conspiracy he helped popularize, almost lead to a random pizza place in DC from being shot up by some nutjob. He was not banned for being right wing, he was banned for hateful speech that has real world consequences. There is a difference, and you can't deny that he was in violation of their terms. Truth be told, they tolerated his presence for far longer than they should have.

Bots yes, Troll sites? Not so much. Censoring legit people posting opinion=Fascism.

Tell me, who decides what is legitimate and what isn't?

Who decides what opinion is acceptable and what isn't?

I don't traffic LW sites so I cannot give you specifics. But if you're going to tell me those sites don't exist I will have to call BS on that. I will easily call out InfoWars as garbage for the most part.

I don't suspect you have the same integrity to call out sites on the Left.

Truth be told, he said things you don't like so you champion shutting him up.
