If you were buying a 4X4 Full size truck, what would you buy?

Alas, the 2005 F150 with 175K miles has a dead transmission. $1.5K to $2K for a rebuild. Truck is worth maybe $5K to 6K.

SOOOOOOOOOOO........

Looking for 4X4 full size truck primarily to be used to haul around 225lbs of dog: two Great Danes......and light farm work.

Thinking 2014 or 2015 coming off of a lease.

What is your brand preference and why?

thanks!!

PS: Anybody want a broken 2005 F150? Make ya a great deal!!

Marcellus' looks amazing. But the dealership here had a white one, and the front end looked really bad. You need to provide some contrast with the chrome for those front ends. I'd probably kill a man for a dark blue one.
deep ocean blue...

i love that color, if my grille had been available on a that color truck i would be driving one.

its a special package though only available in black or white...

What years specifically and what engines? I don't know what you mean by 3v. I'm curious as to what Ford did with their engineering or rather what mistakes they made and on what models. I've been driving my 2003 F150 for 11.5 years since I bought it and it has been rock solid. It's a 4.6L V8. It only has 109k on it as my bike is my daily driver when it's not cold and crappy weather. Just had the spark plugs replaced. Any issues with that model of which I should be aware?

Buddy of mine had an Escape in that timeframe with some shit V6 motor that the cam was going out of at low miles. Is that part of the same type of FUBAR?

He talked to a Ford mechanic that opened his own shop and he said it was a common problem, and he'd recommend trading it. Because it needed a cam. Ford knew about it, but didn't give a ****. Told everybody to ****off. I can't remember if there was a recall on it or not, but if there was it was very short lived. He cleared the code and drove it to the dealership LOL.

I'm not sure how big of a bath he took on it, but those type of situations (and whomever ended up with it). Bought a newer vehicle with low miles for reliability. Had a good chunk borrowed against it, and had to dump it or pile several thousand in a motor (diametrically opposed to "reliable"). He's fine, and it is barely a fleeting memory, but that's how people get in trouble.

I'll never pass on the premium audio again.

There aren't a ton of things that make a big difference in your driving experience for a daily driver. For me, sound is a big deal.

Road noise, build quality (avoid rattles) and the audio system. That just makes a massive difference in how much I enjoy my ride. Sure, I'd love to be able to hoon the shit out of my car and a passing gear is a must, but just about everything has that these days. Hell, 4-door sedans routinely sport 260+ horses and a 0-60 time in the 7-8 range. It ain't fast, but it's more than most people need.

Cars are just really good these days and one of the last places you can find a real difference in ownership experience is in the audio/infotainment system. Touchscreens and a premier stereo are a must have for me anymore.

Because I'd be looking at 2 payments. My wife and I both enjoy having newish vehicles. Mine's paid off and hers is done in a couple of months. If we can sock away another 9-12 months of the monthly payment we had been making, we can throw all of that at the down payment on the new ride.

At that point I could finance the new car for 3 years and get us in a cycle where every 6 years we can trade the older car in for a new one and never end up having 2 payments at once.

What will almost certainly happen is I'll end up with an XC90 or the new Atlas this time around and when that's paid off in 3 years, we'll trade in the pickup, I'll take the new truck and she'll take the SUV. Then we're in sequence going forward and it provides a nice sort of 'wealth accumulation' model. We've built two payments into our budget for the last 5 years so freeing up 700/mo or so will be pretty sweet.

The 4.0 liter SOHC on my 2000 explorer may be my favorite engine of any car I've ever had (not including my 383).

That thing never so much as hiccuped. Ran like a top and it could've been -20 with 2 feet of snow on the ground and it would've turned over once before firing up. Just a great, great motor.

The ball joints, OTOH...

I agree, a sound system is huge for me, and my Chevy is silent going down the road.

They have an add on kicker sub woofer that is plug and play. That makes it sound much better even over the premium sound

Only issue with those is the timing chain in the back of the block.

Hey Jasonsauto:

From a car technician perspective:

If you were buying a 2 to 3 year old 4x4 truck, what would you buy?

Also, thinking of a Yukon type vehicle: again, 2 to 3 year old, what would you buy?

Thanks!

I've installed a shit ton of Ford engines, and only 3 LS motors ever.

They all have their drawbacks.
