Considering a vacation to Atlanta

The kiddo may or may not be coming with us.

Just wondering what to make sure to do while we're there. We decided on Atlanta because neither of us has been there, and it is home of the largest aquarium in the US. Other than that, I'm not for sure what it's known for as far as tourist attractions. I'm commencing Google searches, but I'd just thought I'd also see if anyone on here who either lives there or has been there can suggest some things. Thinking July or August.

Just in case we take the kiddo, he will be 16-18 months at the time of the trip. If you list something, please say whether it would be appropriate (or geared towards) children.

Thanks!

I love Denver don't get me wrong. Just wouldn't like to live there. Moved from Omaha and Omaha is catching up in population fast. Grew up in Omaha and I don't even recognize the town anymore. I will take where I live now.

The wife and I are planning on going to Atlanta in early May for a Cards/Braves series. She's a Braves fan and wants to see the new ballpark.

The new ballpark is way north of the city. Outside of going to and from the airport, we won't be in the city itself.

It's 5 minutes from my house. I wouldn't call it way outside the city.

In ATL just stay north of I-20 and it's pretty tame. South of that line (especially west part of the city) you can enter the Twilight Zone.

I meant the downtown area. The last time we went to a game at Turner we stayed downtown.

As far as getting to area of the new ballpark from the airport, would it be best to take 85 to 75 and go straight through downtown, or take 285?

If you take 285 N toward Chattanooga from the airport you'll end up right at the stadium and avoid downtown traffic altogether. There's a bunch of shopping/restaurants and a hotel right at the stadium too. Although I don't think the hotel will be open until next season.

Right now it's a Charlie Foxtrot over here cause of all the construction. Traffic has been a nightmare. I started working at home because my 6 mile commute to and from the office was taking between 60-90 minutes each way.

If you're a fan of beer there's a brewery nearby, Red Hare, and they open up Wed-Sat afternoon's from 5:30-7:30. Go there and drink beer, it's fun and delicious. I think it's $12 for 6 beers. Uber from the stadium area might be $10.

We were planning the Aquarium and Coca-Cola thing anyway. The science museum is of some interest too.

Do you think five attractions will fit into 2.5 days? We're arriving on a Sunday night, and we're determining whether we want to head back on the following Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning. Either way, we're making the drive home a one stop trip. May try to make it to Memphis to see a Redbirds game. That way I can say I've seen AA, AAA, and MLB Cardinals.

One thing to note is that a lot of the attractions are near each other in kind of a Centennial Park block. It seems you could do the Aquarium, Coca-Cola, and CNN/HOF in one day (finish at the Aquarium, which is often open until 9pm). The natural history museum is in a different location, but you could do that and the fifth option on day 2.

Another thing to note: the College Football HOF is free to active and military veterans.

The ferris wheel is right across the street from the park too. Along with the requisite Waffle House on the other corner which apparently serves as a real restaurant non-drunks go to in that region. I had a few local colleagues ask if I wanted to meet up at that location for dinner after work. No thanks..

Well, this could make traveling around Atlanta a little unpleasant for the next few weeks......

Right in the heart of the city. Ouch.
