Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Not really a movie.

But, "Undefeated" on Netflix was pretty awesome.

Watched an INCREDIBLE movie last night called "We Need To Talk About Kevin" with Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly, its about a family with a very troubled child who eventually goes on to do horrendous things as a young adult, this movie hits right at the heart of our current school shooting epidemic.

This was the first thing i'd ever seen Swinton in and i'll tell you what, THAT girl can act, she is just superb, i am totally blown away by her performance.

Reilly? man, what a career that guys having... from stuff like Talladega Nights and Stepbrothers to heavy lifting like this and Gangs of New York, he can truly do it all.

But the real revelations are the two actors who play Kevin, one as a 5-6 year old, the other as a teen, its just INCREDIBLE how good they both are, particularly the young one, you wont believe how creepy he is, how believeable he is, its uncanny, unsettling.

Heres a word soup for this movie... gripping, provocative, tour de force, ripped from the headlines, chilling, instant classic, emotional trainwreck, awesome, powerful.

I cannot recommend a movie more highly, this is cinema that matters.

Yeah they show that on IFC or Sundance quite a bit, but seems a little to stressful for me.

That movie is based on an equally great book by Lionel Shriver, who while gaining a bit of fame for Kevin, is largely overlooked for a pretty good body of work. Her characters are sometimes hard to love so they miss wide audiences, but she really nails certain issues and Kevin happened at a time when people were looking to understand that particular broken part of an adolescent boy that leads to shootings. Really amazing characters and you are right, the movie is pitch perfect on all counts.

I'd also recommend her Checker and the Derailleurs novel which examines what might be going on behind the scenes even for the happiest appearing young people. Most reviews by readers talk about the atmosphere of a young band in Astoria, and coming of age, but I feel like they missed the point. He appears happy and coming of age until it falls apart, but he really was never happy and all his friends missed the clues. The writing is less polished than in Kevin, as it is a very early work of hers, but the main character, Checker, is equally compelling.

She is one to keep an eye on.

I've seen Swinton in a few things that impressed me. She was the love interest for George Clooney in the Coen Bros comedy Burn after Reading, also a love interest for Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button. In Michael Clayton, she was the lawyer that George Clooney turned the tables on at the end of the movie.

If you like to see John C. Reilly in a good small budget comedy, watch Cedar Rapids with Ed Helms and Anne Heche. I was pleasantly surprised when it was on HBO and much of watched it 4 or 5 times.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Seriously though, Pines was great. And it has a 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes so obviously you are the one thats in the wrong here. You might have a case of ADHD if you thought it was too long(which it wasnt) or too boring(which it definitely wasnt). The chase scene featuring Gosling was the most intense thing I've seen this year and then there was the tense scene in the woods. You obviously dont know what you're talking about.
Now go watch Showgirls
so yeah, this guy is kind of a douche but i have to agree with him. i thought pines was great. superb acting, tremendous camera work, gripping score. i was sucked in immediately with the opening tracking shot behind gosling. wasnt perfect, couldve been edited down a little but i dont get the hate. 100% better than the average hollywood shite they put out

I read that JJ Abrams is considering making a film out of an unproduced script Rod Serling wrote. I think Serling was awesome and very creative. I really hope it happens.
