Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:

• No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
• Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
• Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

I had no idea Illyrio was speaking with Varys at any point. That is very fascinating! There is so much manipulation going on behind the scenes that I didn't even catch before. So Varys was spying on Dany with Jorah, but for whose benefit? To help protect her and not to keep the Lannisters notified of what she is doing the way we might suspect?

Yep, this is one of the reasons the books are great re-reads. I caught a ton more the second time through than I did the first time. I haven't re-watched the show, but I generally watch each episode again each week before the next one airs, or at least my favorite parts.

Illyrio is the fat guy whose house Dany and Viserys were staying in during season 1 before they married Dany off to Khal Drogo. He was also seen by Arya talking to Varys in season 1.

Varys is the spy master. Bald eunuch, he's the one who took revenge on the guy who cut off his nuts by keeping him in that box (he shows Tyrion). He tells Tyrion some people will remember what he did for the city. He helps tyrion escape and then goes with him when he hears the bells ringing.

Right, and Varys realizes Tyrion killed Tywin, and that Varys will be blamed for helping Tyrion escape and get to Tywin's room since nobody else really knows the secret passageways like Varys, so Varys ends up having to go with Tyrion to save his own hide. He doesn't seem overly upset about it, I guess he's okay going wherever Tyrion is being sent.

I rewatched the last episode again last night. My God there was some good acting in that episode. One of the more underrated scenes is Arya leaving the hound to die. He portrayed the pain so well. It was palpable. Then him being degraded to beg for death. Add in the fact that he was finally fighting for Arya instead of the right to sell her and ends up getting his hands hacked up, beat in the head with a rock, ear bitten off, and chucked off a cliff. The whole thing was brutal. Different kind of brutal than the Red Wedding but brutal nonetheless.

Outstanding TV.
