Amazon announces Fire TV

http://sourcefed.com/amazon-announces-fire-tv/

Amazon has dove in head first into video hardware, announcing it’s new set-top device: Amazon Fire TV.

Clearly a competitor for Apple TV and Roku, the $99 device is an internet-connected set-top box which uses voice commands that you speak into its remote control. It will also serve as a gaming console, and consumers have the option to purchase a separate $39 controller that is paired with the box.

Amazon has claimed the device is 3 times more powerful than Apple TV and is based on Android and HTML 5, which means it should be easy for companies to bring their apps over to the platform. It supports Hulu Plus, Netflix, Pandora, Youtube, Crackle, iHeartRadio and Vevo. Sadly, HBO Go and Vudu are not supported.

Fire TV also has a predictive engine called “ASAP,” which pre-loads content it thinks you are going to watch, so it can start without any buffering or load time. This feature learns over time and gets better at suggesting content you like.

In a prior announcement made this weekend, Amazon said it will be turning six shows from its Amazon Originals program into a full series. The shows, which were selected after viewer feedback from the pilot episodes, include ’The After’, ‘Bosch, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street’, ‘Mozart in the Jungle’, ‘Transparent’ and ’Wishenpoof’. Amazon also renewed ’Alpha House’ — starring John Goodman — for a second season.

As far as gaming is concerned, the console will offer titles such as “Minecraft” and “The Walking Dead”. Many of the titles will be free or cost a little as $1.85 to play.

XBMC has never run better for me. Running XBMC Gotham 13.1. It's been rock solid. Haven't had a single issue in weeks.

I got a 3rd party bluetooth gamepad from Amazon for $20: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's been great. Got hooked on a few games now. Sev Zero is really fun. Asphalt 8 is also a blast. Dungeon Quest has been highly addictive. The kid digs Minecraft.

Being able to switch between Netflix/Pandora/Games and XBMC within about 10 seconds is pretty sweet.

My main problem with it currently is that search appears to be completely broken, for me at least.

I search and it just returns every move in the database.

I also tried that Genesis app, and all I got from it was a bunch of old movies. Search didn't work and none of the category views worked.

You might want to consider doing a fresh start and installing the latest version. I did, and I'm running Gotham 13.2 final. It's been flawless.

I had lots of issues when I tried upgrading from older versions. But when I did a fresh start and started from scratch, everything worked perfectly. You will lose everything though.

Thats that part I hate about XBMC. They really need to make a login method so your tracked shows can be saved.

You can use trakt.tv. It integrates with Genesis and can be synced on any PC or device.

Create an account at Trakt. Create your lists in trakt, as in TV, Movies, Kids stuff, etc.
Make your Trakt lists public on the website, so you can see them.
Download the trakt plugin in XBMC. It's found in the XBMC.org official repo.
Enter your trakt info into Genesis settings.

Read up:

What Is Trakt:

Trakt is a platform that does many things, but primarily keeps track of TV shows and movies you watch. It integrates with your media center or home theater PC to enablescrobbling, so everything is automatic. Some people like to*check in*from their phone, so we enable that too. Discover new shows, follow people with similar tastes and voice your opinion on by using the trakt website or one of the many*community apps*that were built using our API.

Essentially it can Trakt what your watching and also save the location of a movie when you exit. The service also lets you tell it the shows and movies you want to watch, or the content you own.

trakt is free to use! If you really enjoy it, consider upgrading your account to*VIP. VIP unlocks some special features and, more importantly, supports the project and the team. Stop reading and*sign up now!

---------- ------------

Lamba has utilized Trakt in an unexpected way. With the use of his add-on, and the use of the Trakt add-on within XBMC.ORG's repo, you can add any shows to Trakt.tv you want to... When you log your Trakt account into Genesis you will see that all of the content you have added to Trakt is immediately seen in the add-on.

Movies are listed as if the were hard copies on a flash drive and made available immediately.

TV Shows are listed as if Genesis was made just for you by provided a list of the LATEST EPISODES according to the shows you have added to your Trakt service. It also creates a pls e to scroll through the Trakt listed TV Shows you have added to the service as if they were a library of content. Scrolling through complete collections of each show.

If you want to go even further... You can download anoter Trakt add-on from xbmc.org's repo, the the Programs Section, that will add every show you watch in XBMC, as well as every movie, to your Trakt library.

Together, this creates a situstion that is unparalleled in customizing a rd experience all while making it seem less to share it a cross devices. You can now log into Trakt, on Genesis, on countless devices (Think phone, tablet, computer, and set top box) and you will immediately have the same library and custom set up with NO WORK

LOL... I don't know I just ignore that part......

I assume that's for assembling your own individual collections of media. Letting you create different lists like Kids Movies, Chick Flicks, 80's Movies, etc...

Genesis lets you prioritize sources too, if you haven't found that part. In the Genesis settings, you can choose your source priority. Figure out which ones work best for you and put those at the top of the list.

The only thing annoying about Genesis I have found is their scraping database and their sources database are two separate things. So as you search through a show, there will be episodes listed, but are not actually on the "scene." Kinda sends you on a goose chase rather than not listing the episode at all.

An example is episode 7 for this season NY Med. "The scene" never capped it, so it doesnt exist online, other than abc.com. Genesis lists it like normal but if you click on it, it searches and searches for it but finds nothing. Just wastes your time. Otherwise I love Genesis.
