I don't know that it's as good as BB, but they're really two completely different shows. The Shield is more of a procedural police drama with a pretty big ensemble cast and Breaking Bad is very much focused on a handful of characters. However, the one thing they both have in common is that they definitely like to blur the line between "good guys" and "bad guys".
For me The Shield jumped the shark late in the series when Vic Mackey was about to be exposed and fired, but he just happened to make a traffic stop, and the car he stopped just happened to have all of this damning evidence in the trunk that he could use to blackmail the people who were going to fire him.

It was the quintessential deus ex machina, and it really pissed me off. However, on the whole The Shield was awesome.

It's tv. It requires us to suspend some of our sense of reality.
Breaking Bad is supposed to be realistic. It's a character-driven show, or is at its best anway.

The Wire is a little different. It's closest parallel, for me, is Brechtian Epic Theater, with a supplemental touch of Dickensian serialized novel. The Wire was more concerned with advancing its political arguments than anything else.

Don't read if you get pissed off anyone throws the term "racism" around. Anyway, leave it to salon to try to **** up and make me dislike the subtext of a show I really love. It's still a pretty cool analysis.

I don't find it to be "absurd" so much as strained. I do think the sterile/pure trope in the drug world as depicted in BB is an interesting phenom. I don't know about it being a racial issue (as Gus, who isn't white, was the king of that world), but I do think it creates a thematic contrast between the sterility and controlled environment of the drug making and the messiness and unpredictability of the drug trade.

As far as Breaking Bad is concerned, Walter’s meth is bought and used in unadulterated form, whereas in any believable scenario distributors would dilute (“step on”) the product for sale. Finally, toward the end of the fifth season, Walter is forced to explain to a new organization that customers will pay more for his product than, say, one that was 85 percent pure. The other manufacturer seems to accept Walter’s logic even though, as an ostensibly experienced dealer, he should know it doesn’t make any sense. America isn’t flooded with pure meth, and it’s not because our chemists are too ethical. The illegal drug market simply doesn’t reward peerless expertise in the same way celebrity cooking shows do.
This is pretty silly. Whether or not Walt's product is being presented as being sold on the street in undiluted form or not, the greater the purity of the wholesale product, the more it can be stepped on downstream, the greater the profit, and yes, the more loyal the customer. The fact that the show doesn't choose to address the nuts and bolts of drugs at the retail level is irrelevant. It isn't a documentary about how drugs are made and sold.

See? Se how white privilege allows some to gloss over the gritty details of the travails of the least of ours.

Didn't salon run a similar kind of aritcle last year? I wonder if it was the same guy. I think it is absurd. The way he keeps using the word, "supremicist" makes it seem like it's an active goal of the show's writers and creators. As if the show was organized around a desire to further some white supremicist agenda. That is absurd. Using the phrase, "white supremicist," takes it from a people rooting for Walt because they can relate to him concept to a white people like it because they're racists level. He's not just saying the show is popular because many people can relate to Walt in terms of his race and his initial middle class existence. He's saying there's an active desire to make people say, "yeah, white people!" There's nothing wrong with creating a character that people can relate to. You're supposed to look at Walt at the beginning and think he looks like someone you might know. That's part of the show. He's the guy next door, or your teacher, and he broke bad.
For the author take it a step further and act like people's joy comes from some racial conflict where white comes out on top makes me think he just has an agenda against the show, or he just wants a reaction and he's reaching for the race card, which is the easiest way to get a reaction.
The way he refernces The Wire in the article makes me think he probably suffers from Whitlock's Wire vs Breaking Bad mentality.
