QBR rating system has...issues
I know some really like the QBR rating system, which tries to improve on the old standby QB passer rating system. It does seem to have some serious issues though.
The link below is to an article by Kerry Bryne, a Patriots homer, and while I disagree with his "ESPN is out to get Brady" slant, he does understand statistics and he does make some excellent points. If you don't want to read the article, here's the main issue -- Brady had the second WORST QBR rating last week against the Cowboys. His line: 20 of 27, passed for 2 TDs, ran in for another one, and zero interceptions. He did have one fumble (recovered by the Pats). That gets him a 130.9 passer rating, but somehow only a 24.1 QBR. According to ESPN, Brady's game was the second worst by any NFL QB in football last week. Matt Stafford, with 3 INTs, had a higher QBR. http://espn.go.com/nfl/qbr/_/type/player-week/week/5 errr.....?!? I don't care that Brady does or doesn't get love from ESPN. I'm really just questioning any system that suggests that Brady completely sucked ass on Sunday. I saw the game and my eyeballs very clearly told me that that isn't true. http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/p...om_brady_short |

At one point, I'd thought it'd be fun to sit down with ESPN and see how they formulated QBR.
Now I feel it'd just turn into a lengthy teeth grinding session.

It tries to do what stats aren't supposed to do, which is tell the entire story rather than give you a completely factual guideline. The problem is that there are way too many variables that are completely subjective in how they are weighted. The biggest thing I noticed is that sacks, which a lot of the time are beyond the QBs control, will drastically drive the rating down.
What really bothers me is that the ESPN brainwashing of calling it "QBR" instead of what they originally called it "TQBR" is actually working and people refer to it as actual QBR |

Bortles had 250 yards, 3 passing touchdowns, 1 rushing touchdown, and 0 interceptions. Ended with a QBR of 3.8. Don't know how you could defend that.

PFF gave him a minus 5 rating with the reasoning he lost two fumbles and didn't do much on his throws.

Baseball has done it for years, because it's relevant. Football never did because it's not. One guy running a simple route can effect an entire play that never gets mentioned. Sacks. Ints. Passes defensed. Yards. Tackles. TFL. Those are the stats. Having some dillweed who's never played the game on a laptop looking at replays trying to grade out the game is a little dumb. But all of a sudden, it's a tangible thing. Because the casual fan doesn't ****ing know any better anyway and it's gives a value to something that they wouldn't understand. |

QBR and ESPN. ESPN is impossible to watch.
