***Official CP Homebrew American IPA Collaboration Thread***

Here is the final CP Homebrew American IPA collaboration recipe that was voted on (mostly) by you fine folks. In order to move this recipe forward, I've made some estimates and suggestions on certain ingredients and processes. I have noted them as "(Suggested)" in the recipe. Feel free to adjust to what you like or works best for you. Most notable are the dry hops. Instead of doing a whole nother round of votes for dry hops, I kept them the same as the boil hops with suggested amounts and number of days. Everyone seems to have preferred dry hop methods, so I thought it best to leave it up to the individual but provide a pretty standard suggestion. I dry hop the ever living **** out of my beers so that's one I'll probably adjust when I go to brew this. The gravities and IBU's are an estimate as well. I left out things like Irish moss/whirlfloc additions, racking to secondary, and cold crashing, but feel free include any of those for you clear beer folks. On the surface, this looks to be an IPA with a low perceived bitterness yet a good amount of tropical hop flavor and aroma.

I've included an all grain recipe and an extract conversion via BeerSmith. Please see the note on the extract conversion below. There's also links to all the previous threads and some other links that you may find useful.

Thanks to everyone who participated and happy brewing. Be sure to update this thread with how your beer turned out and pics.

All Grain
Spoiler!

***Note: The recipe calls for Cara-Pils/Dextrine, which is used to add body and head retention without altering taste or color. It also needs to be mashed. So the options for the extract version would be to steep the Cara-Pils/Dextrine or substitute Maltodextrin in the boil for it OR just leave it out (what I would do). I've never used Maltodextrin and with this being an IPA, I don't think it's impactful enough to use it, but do as you will.***

I just throw mine in. It all drops to the bottom during a cold crash, so just have to be careful when siphoning out after.

Yup if you cold crash no reason to put hops in a bag. If you use gelatin even less reason.

I was using these $1 dollar general pantyhose leggings for a long time, you could get several ounces in each one.

Since I started crashing and using gelatin there isnt a need.

Speaking of which I put the 2PM IPA in the fridge to crash today. Im going to give it 2 days there then add gelatin and Keg on Thursday or Friday.

Im going to bottle about half a gallon or maybe a gallon to have some to send out.

Who all plans to share their beers?

One of these days I need to try gelatin, but at this point I'm just keeping things simple.

I plan on throwing mine in the fridge tomorrow, for two weeks. Got some travel coming up, but will keg when I get back. I'm expecting to have a 6 pack of pint size bottles after kegging, but in CO. Don't think anyone else doing this is local to me for trading.

Going to have to mail it. Its expensive but not insane. And sharing the beer is the beauty of it.

I'll have to sample it first, no reason to ship bad beer!

I plan to bottle some and ship as well. I think I found a decent work around to a beer gun with just a picnic tap, bottling wand, and rubber stopper. So barring any transfer complications, I should have a few bottles to share along with anything else from Chicago/Great Lakes anyone is interested in.

I'm at least a couple weeks out depending on how this conditions.

I'll be bottling straight from the carboy. Kind of a PITA, but a binder clip on an autosiphon hose makes it easier. I siphon to the keg first, then to the bottles. I find this helps for bottle conditioning after a cold crash sends the minimal amount of suspended yeast into dormancy. I also find I have to use 2 belgian candies per pint bottle, and leave at room temperature for about 2 weeks.

My biggest concern is whether these bottles will ship well. I use the easy-cap Grolsch style bottles so I don't have to deal with capping.

Sitting at 1.012 after one week. Going to ramp up the temp to squeeze out any additional gravity points and let the yeast clean up after themselves. Likely transferring to the keg on Sunday.

Was planning on cold crashing Monday (2 weeks), but still bubbling. Been letting it ride, but this is the longest fermentation I've ever had for a beer. 18 days so far. Looks to finally be about done. Hoping to crash tomorrow.

I have been crashing for several days and will keg on Sunday as well.

Decided rather than bottling I will use my beer gun to fill bottles off the keg to send out if anyone is interested in doing some beer trading.

Day 3 at 1.012 so I kegged it. No cold crash. Tied off my keg dry hops with unscented dental floss. The smell coming out is pure over ripened tropical juice.

Here's the uncarbed sample I pulled while kegging. Obviously still very young, but the aroma was bursting. Been awhile since I've worked with Chico, so I plan to pull samples every week until its there. Then I'll get some bottles out to whoever wants em. Obviously, I'm going for the unfiltered appearance which I'm sure with settle some while carbing at 45F for a few weeks.

For you yeast nerds, this is practically the same beer brewed with an English strain back in June. Same water profile, same hopping process (different hops), similar grain bill. I always try to take similar pics at similar stages in the process, with similar light for science and such as. Drink every time you read similar.
