How the NFL is Cheating Rookies out of Millions of Dollars

http://ble.ac/2tU9cdS

Not able to post on my phone but this a really interesting article.

What do you think? Should NFL players strike? If you were an NFL rookie, what would your mindset be?

Some rookies get screwed, some get paid more than they deserve. It was worse the old way. I don't really want to go to a system where top drafted rookie could leave the team after say 3 years so I don't know how you fix it unless you do something like that. Like they said, if you perform at a high level, it'll work itself out. You'll rake it in in your second or third contract.

NFL step on their players necks sometimes. If you blow up your first and second year you deserve more money.

On our team it's pretty clear Peters should make more money. Hill most likely will continue to be a bad ass and make jack shit compared to his value to the team. A 5th rounder makes shit. Has any 5th rounder ever scored as many tds as him their rookie year or was so explosive? I doubt it.

Don't know Hill's contract but as a 5th rounder, I'm sure it's not a 5 year deal. Probably 2 or 3 years but I don't know where to find that. He'll be raking it in soon enough. They should be in discussions with him now to lock him in early. They should lock Peters in during the 4th year before he hits that 5th year.

All drafted players are signed to 4 year contracts.

Teams have the option to pick up the 5th year but it doesn't always happen.

Undrafted Free Agents sign 3 year deals but they're under club control for the 4th year, although a new contract has be put in place.

The Chiefs can extend Dee Ford this year or just allow him to play through his 5th year option (which was picked up).

The Chiefs can't extend Peters until the new league year begins in March, 2018, as he's only played 2 seasons in the league.

Then throw in the number of games they play that bring in that revenue stream. Yep, pretty easy to see the dividing line.

I couldn't possibly care less if the players strike or if they are getting screwed. Love the game, but could not care less.

The players - for all of their talents - didn't actually create the sport. They are beneficiaries of decades of men who slogged away for a pittance compared to any rookie deal. They didn't build the business and simply want to reap the benefits. It's the Lavar Ball mentality.

If I sell a script to a studio, they will make a ton more money on a hit than I will. Guess why? Because they put up the capital a hundred years ago. They built the industry. They have the infrastructure and distribution and marketing capabilities. If the players think they can handle branding and litigation and negotiate with cities for stadiums and liaise with fanbases about parking and community integration and sponsors, they're ****ing crazy.

The bosses are the bosses and are paid as such. I'm a bleeding heart liberal socialist, but welcome to reality.

It's 4 years for all rounds? I knew it was that way for the first round, but for the 7th? 5th year option is only for first rounders I believe.

The whole point of the salary schedule implemented in the recent(ish) CBA was to stop unproven rookies from getting paid huge amounts of money while never actually contributing (see Jamarcus Russell). Are top rookies underpaid for a few years? Sure, but the whole point is that there's more money to go around to pay vets their due.

The only "better" solution would be strictly pay-based performance, and I doubt anyone would want that.

I agree with Daface, the old model was much worse. Rookies holding out, not playing up to their contract, hurting the teams salary cap... It was a terrible design. Now, if you play will you will get paid.

Unless you get a career ending injury after a couple of awesome years but before you get to that second contract. Then you never really got compensated for the value you brought the team. If Hill gets blown up and can never play again this year or next he will be a (relative) pauper.

Yes, the 5th year option only applies to first round selections.
