Dee Ford is not good at the game of football. He will never be more than a backup on a good team.

Ford doesn't seem to have very good football instincts. Could be from being in a new system or whatever I suppose.

He needs to be more Hali than houston

Yeah Ford is more like Tamba then Houston. New to the position, high effort.

Houston is just a freak. He's got the body/strength to walk OT's into QB's. Ford will probably never be able to do that consistently.

Funny because I think just the opposite.

Ford has the skills to be a poor man's Houston. He has the quickness and the lateral agility. He has the frame to get Houston's power (Houston wasn't Houston when he came into the league, if you'll recall). He shows flashes with elite body lean.

The guy has every physical tool you could want, enough to smoke Hali across the board.

Why target being Grant Wistrom; a high motor energy guy who techniques himself into 10-12 sacks a year? Ford's ceiling is higher than that.

I get back to the hockey prospect grading system I've always been such a fan of. It assigns a number and a letter grade; your top end and chance of hitting it.

Coming out, Hali would've probably been considered something like an 7(B); a guy with high end starter upside with a pretty good chance of reaching it. Meanwhile Houston would've been a 10(C); hall of fame upside but flags around him that suggest he's more likely than not to not hit it.

Ford's closer to Houston than he is Hali in that system. I'd say he's more like an 8(D). Higher ceiling than Hali but more risk of not amounting to much at all. Not the 10 ceiling that Houston has, but he definitely has the tools of an impact player and that's absolutely how he should conduct himself. If he resigns himself to trench warfare like Hali has, he'll never have a chance to capitalize on all the tools he has at his disposal.

I don't necessarily think that he needs to be Hali like, more hed be more effective speed rushing from the back side against the LT.

I don't know that the guy ever gets to the high level because I dunno that he has the innate things those guus have, instinct wise.

And I'd love it for him to be a 10 12 sack guy.

I have to agree with O City about his instincts, they really dont seem too keen

Where I've watched him make up for that lack, is with pure athleticism... with another year of strength/technique training, we have to hope that he can "learn" to be instinctive

If he is able to put it all together, theres no question he can be a double digit sacker

FTR, pretty sure I understand what he was thinking on the frisco run play... he didnt want to get washed out by the scrum, so he turned and tried to find an open space to make the play before the first down marker

Still though, it was a bad decision... sometimes you have to sacrifice your body and slam in there and take a few guys out to get to the tackle

I don't think that's what happened. I think he just simply thought he got fooled by play action and tried to recover. I mean, look where he was lined up. Coverage was still knew to him and he was probably so scared to make a mistake he just had a brain fart.

This redefines homerism.

What? I'm not saying it wasn't an embarrassingly bad play at the time. I'm just trying to make sense out of a very bizarre play. He literally turned away from the ball carrier as if he didn't think he had the ball.

I disagree, he makes eye contact and squares up to try and make the tackle then changes his mind

He has played plenty enough football to know where the ball is at that point, that would've had to be the greatest play fake of all time to fool even a young pro that long

But at the same time, I'm not going to use this single play to try and determine his football past, present and future... still have high hopes for him, I see his athleticism and elite quickness just like you

He has flashed scary talent, I'm certainly not ready to write him off over this play
