I actually don't buy into the narrative either that because Byron Maxwell got 63 million, then Sean Smith gets even more.

If anything, Byron actually hurt his chances of getting that money. Teams are going to be smarter and more hesitant now. Especially with Smith being 29 soon.

I think it's entirely possible the Chiefs could keep him for less than 10 million PY.

All depends on how much he wants etc, like it does on all FA.

How much is everyone prepared to spend at the position of Safety?

Draft is good at corner, we should consider that position pretty high in the draft regardless of whether or not Smith stays.

one injury and we had to move a safety to corner, should tell you a lot.

can't let Fleming and Cooper waste roster spots anymore

Fleming is a good special teams player so he may be kept around. Cooper is pretty worthless though

If he is dead set on wanting 10m per, we should shop around because for that much, we could probably get a guy like Janoris Jenkins that's much younger.

If we are snagging one of LA's corners, it needs to be Trumaine Johnson. Dude has Sean Smith size and tremendous playmaking ability.

It's also worth noting that John Dorsey has been pretty damn good at drafting/signing corners and that GB was nails in drafting corners while he was scouting for them, too.

If we lose him and need to draft a replacement, I would be confident in who they have out there.

We had all sorts of depth problems because we used spots on special team guys. I would hope we'd improved enough to have enough talent for guys to compete for a position and play special teams.

Hammond,Avant and DAT - Gone (let Wilson be the gadget guy)
Fleming,Cooper - gone (get CB to develop etc instead)
carry 1 less safety, add another corner imo

That's 3 corner and 3 Wrs spots to fill even if we keep Sean Smith, that's a lot.

some of our skill position have shitty depth tbh

Because the present allocation is, by and large, sunk costs. At least to the extent that it's not relevant to how we should go about spending money that's not yet spent.

Sure, it's an interesting rearview analysis, but what does it matter? We'll have somewhere in the neighborhood of 32-$40 million to spend and that's with a roster that's only about 2/3 complete.

We're only going to have about $20-$24 million in 'luxury' spending and that's only going to be able to bring back 2 of the big 4 FAs, IMO. Well, unless Dorsey can get do more of the low year 1 base, high signing bonus stuff. But with a 29 yr old CB, that's just not a good idea in that it almost certainly marries you to him for 4 years. We can only do that so many times before we run out of rope and start losing guys like Kelce or Poe.

And just because we have more money presently allocated to the defense doesn't mean that the offense isn't still a unit that needs help in its own right.

The odds of a rookie CB being better than Gaines are pretty remote. It's rare that you get a guy like Peters, that's what made that pick so impressive. Most of the time you get guys that need to grow into the role. Dorsey had a baller draft last year and maybe he'll do it again, but counting on a rookie and soph CB is probably not a good idea.

I still say you look at the group of 'first contract' FAs to get your Smith replacement. Trumaine Johnson would be my first choice. Casey Hayward might be another good fit. I think Josh Robinson from Minnesota really thrived in 2014 in Zimmer's more aggresive scheme and he'll be extremely undervalued though he doesn't have the length that Sutton prefers. Jeremy Lane has all the physical attributes you'd like and has shown good ball skills. If the staff thinks he can make the transition back to the outside and into more press, he'd also be an outstanding fit.

They've got to get more explosive on offense. Some you would hope would come from the growth of wilson, conley, oshaunessy, etc.

I think they need another guy outside though.

that's not how inflation works lol

it didn't stop Byran Maxwell for getting 10 million a year because Brandon Carr stunk it up when he got his.

It won't stop some team with a lot of cap space that needs to bring in somebody for unloading the brinks trucks either.
