The San Diego Padres have reached an agreement with free-agent pitcher James Shields on a four-year deal that will pay him in the range of $75 million, a source confirmed to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick on Monday.

Shields' deal includes a club option for a fifth year, the source told ESPN.com.

...

The veteran right-hander, who grew up near San Diego, provides the Padres with a workhorse in pitching-friendly Petco Park. Shields ranks first among MLB pitchers with 1,785 2/3 innings pitched since 2007, according to baseball-reference.com. Seattle's Felix Hernandez is second in that span with 1,785 1/3 innings, while Detroit's Justin Verlander is third at 1,780 2/3.

No. But, he's an innings eater, so there's that.

He's 32 right? I'm surprised we paid him this much, but I'm hoping we can get 2 seasons of 200+ innings from him. Even if he doesn't pitch lights out, the eating up of innings will help the team as a whole.

Are you calling him useless because he didn't do well in the playoffs or what?

I'm having trouble believing we paid $20mil a year to a brokedick.

He's never been injured and if he keeps to form, he'll give you 33-34 starts with a 3.5ish ERA. Solid, but he's obviously got some miles on him and giving him that much at his age is risky.

Seems like a good contract for both sides. I'm fine with Royals passing on it though.

He'll give you innings. I really liked Shields in KC actually, besides the playoffs. Felt he helped the young guys a lot. He's very vocal and intense.

But he's older and that's a rather large contract. But clearly with the other Padre signings, they are looking to make a run. If that comes early in the contract before he fades, who cares I guess?

But between him and Myers you've got some locker room issues to worry about. Might need to see if Jeff Francoeur is available.
