Justice League on track to lose Warner Bros. 'between 50 and 100 million.

Justice League on track to lose Warner Bros. 'between 50 and 100 million

Justice League’s opening weekend at the box office should have called for a celebration.

Considering Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman all opened to over $100 million (the former taking $160 million), you would expect the Avengers-style blockbuster to make at least that much.

However, despite being a gigantic superhero event — Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, and the Flash finally teaming up to defeat evil — cinema-goers just weren’t as excited as Warner Bros. predicted.

Tracking for a $110 to $120 million opening weekend, Justice League took $96 million at the US box office, making just over $280 million worldwide. Unfortunately, despite still being a huge number, the studio is reportedly on track to lose $50 to $100 million once the movie has played out of cinemas.

Spiderman 3 is at the top of my shitlist for worst superhero movie. ****ing up Venom was inexcusable.

Hell yeah. Standalone Batman films have crossed a billi at the box office.

The Justice League is the premier superhero team.

IIRC, both Avengers flicks crossed the billion mark.

Do you really think Marvel isn’t expecting both Infinity Wars to do just the same?

10 years ago (OK 5), how much a movie made within a genre like comic book adaptions or science fiction was VERY important. The genres were, IMO, greatly neglected. A poorly performing film meant increased risk and less funding for other genre specific ventures.

Now that these genres are mainstream, not every production needs to be profitable. In fact I'm now happy when shitty products bomb, where as 10 years ago a bad comic/scifi flick reflected poorly on the entire genre.

EDIT:
Oh, no judgement on JL. I haven't seen it yet. Just commenting on the importance of profit from a fan perspective.

Marvel budgeted a BILLION dollars for EACH Infinty Wars movie. I imagine they are expecting some serious cash.

EDIT:
My bad, apparently it is a COMBINED budget of 1 Billion.

How about The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or Raimi's Spider-Man 3?

Let's go back a bit further: Batman Forever? Batman and Robin?

All of those movies completely missed the mark.

Universal failed wildly this year at creating a "Dark Universe" featuring The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Werewolf, Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. These are all extremely well known IP for the last 100+ years (Frankenstein back to the 1850's) yet even Tom Cruise couldn't get it launched.

Movie making is ****ing difficult. Finding an audience is even more difficult.
"GotG" was considered a low-risk fringe curiosity. No one expected it to be such a big hit. "Star Wars" was considered such a joke that even the actors on the set thought it was going to bomb horribly. The surest way to make a bad movie is to make a movie solely with the intent of creating a hit and making money with it.

I don't get why everyone rags on the directing. First of all, maybe I'm in the minority, but I like Snyder's work. "300" was very creative, I loved "Watchmen", and "Sucker Punch" was strange but beautiful. (And Joss Whedon is only the guy who created one of the best TV shows ever ("Buffy") and also helmed "The Avengers".) Yes, Snyder has a specific style to his work, much like Abrams has his, but I'm not sure exactly what people want or expect out of a superhero movie. Slow-action shots? Dramatic music? Witty one-liners? Humor mixed with drama/action? Special effects? Splosions? Looked like "JL" had all that to me. As I said, I think the biggest problem for DC's stuff is that it all came after Marvel's and suffer (unfairly) by comparison.

I expect to not be bored. Batman vs Superman was OK at times, but there were long stretches where I was bored to tears. I didn't much care for Eisenberg as Luthor, so maybe that put a damper on it too. Also, Martha.

I think Eisenberg did a fantastic job of playing his part. The problem is they ****ed up the character of Alexander Luthor so, so horribly. Just one of the many things wrong with that film, really.

Whatever it was, Lex Luthor just wasn't enjoyable. Way more interested in seeing Batfleck and Joker go at it. They already teased the fact that Joker killed one of the Robins.

You used to be able to rely on Movie stars to put people in seats now that barely works.

The reliance on foreign markets is another wild goose chase films like Transformers 4 or even Warcraft blow up in some of the major overseas markets whilst doing comparatively poor in the States (in the case of the latter).

Movie making has become an exercise in risk management more than ever right now.
Fast and Furious is still making $1 BILLION on every film.

I wouldn't call a $170 million production budget "low-risk".

NOBODY knew these character. Most Marvel fans were not fans of GotG.

You're right that no one expected it to be a hit, which is why every comment about it was in regards to it beings a HUGE risk for Marvel
