Whether it is common or not, the driver walked out on the track towards Stewart’s car and deliberately put himself as close to the car as possible. The back wheel hit him. Stewart wanted to run him down; he would have taken him out by hitting him directly.

This is the problem with American racing. They lack safety precautions in order to promote TV entertainment. Who expects to see a driver walking in the middle of a track gesticulating to another driver passing by? On the other hand, who expects to see drivers wreaking other drivers on purpose? This is the type of behavior that American racing promotes to the point where it influences the next generation of racecar drivers.

I cant believe how many people are trying to blame the kid. Yes, ill agree, walking out on the track was not the smartest thing.

But here is what I haven't seen anyone mention. One, if you ran over someone why wouldn't you stop? He had to know he just ran over something he shouldn't have right?

Second, if he didn't do it on purpose, why would he gun it at the precise moment that Kevin Ward was nearing his car. He was either one, trying to get away from him, and slid the tires, or being a royal douche.

Either way it was a terrible ****ing decision.

Bullshit, that was a purposeful act with greater consequence than expected, at best. HE punched A guy. That's not an accident, unless his fist was roaming randomly through space and this guy's face interceded out of nowhere.

There is no proof beyond your fevered biases that what Stewart did is anything like the robbing, stabbing, shoving, raping and killing that you equate it with here. The stabber wasn't navigating a sanctioned knife thrusting course where some participant wandered into his thrusting lane. The rapist wasn't navigating a sanctioned dick thrusting course where a random female's cootchie wandered a bit too close.

If any truly and fervently believe that Stewart intended to make physical contact with this man with his vehicle, that's fine. I think that's a psychotic leap at this juncture, but that's your belief.

My take is that Tony Stewart probably had trouble seeing the guy before it was too late and hit him by accident. I really find it hard to believe that Stewart "wanted" to hit/kill this kid. Kid was stupid to get out of his car and try and act like a badass.

Seems pretty obvious. Dumb kid was wearing black on a poorly lit track with black dirt. Looked like a car or two just missed the oaf as well. Give the boy a Darwin Award.
Also the US is about the only place you see drivers trying to be classy walking onto the track to give someone shit or fire their helmet at a passing rivals car (I saw this once, who the **** was it? Many years back). Never stop being awesome.

Happened a few times. The one I remember the most was Dale Jarrett because at that time they were promoting the NFL and it happened to be a Chiefs helmet. He wore a different nfl team each race.

Or was it Bobby Labonte? It's tough getting old.

Watch the deadspin video again pay particular attention to the volume of motor revving that goes down by the majority of cars(a la yellow flag) in volume as the kid 'initially' gets out of his car. Then watch as the kid briefly disappears from the screen shot going after Tony, then a blue car goes by, then suddenly the kid and Tony come back into the screen shot as Tony revs his engine fish tailing hitting him and then dragging him.

Bottom line: Both were being tools. One loses his life. And the other will lose $$ and get parole at the worst. Sad situation.
