Need advice on a tablet.

I want to buy my old man a tablet for Christmas so he can FB with the family and keep tabs on his friends and events.

He's fairly computer-literate so the learning curve shouldn't be too hard. Is there a model I can buy that has built-in internet so that he doesn't have to buy airtime or service cards?

Thank you.

We gave my FIL an Amazon Kindle Fire HDX last year for Christmas so he could Facebook, Skype and email with us and my 6 year old (who also received a Kindle for Christmas). A year later and both are going strong.

My mom initially took my brother's advice and bought a Dell, which didn't work properly. After hours on tech support, they sent her a replacement. It didn't work either so she got a refund.

She finally took my advice and bought a Kindle HDX 8.9 and she's never had any issues and loves it.

Got my 73 year old mother an HD fire last year, she knows nothing of the internet. Now she is a pro. Their support is second to none.

I'm on the Galaxy Note 10.1 and absolutely love it. But it is on the expensive end of the spectrum. For what you are needing you could go with the sub $300 tablets easy.

If he's tech savvy and you want to have lots of options for apps and games, go with a Nexus. If ease of use is more important for the core group of most popular apps, Kindle Fire.

Yeah, if I had one gripe about my Note it would be that I can't just install stock android on it yet. Keep in mind that it is a minuscule gripe.

Thanks. I saw that they had wi-fi, but the old man doesn't keep a PC or router in the house. Hence my inquiry about service plans, airtime etc.

That HDX with the help system looks pretty sweet.

He can get a service plan on most tablets through a cell phone provider such as T-Mobile. The main problem with that is that it's going to have a data cap on it most likely. If he's doing a lot of browsing and streaming on his tablet as his sole device, he's going to cap out pretty quickly and costs will run up.

Probably better off financially getting internet at his house with wireless.

Correct me if I am wrong, but dont those fires come with tech support help right on the screen? Making them perfect for the tech illiterate?

Look into the iPads with cellular then. Their data packages are month to month and I think I saw that the newest iPads may let you swap from one carrier to another. Either way, you'll want to make sure that there's decent service at his house before you commit to one carrier over another.

Got my mom an iPad and she loves it. There are no contracts, as the service is month to month.

I am not standing on my tablet to give you advice.

But a Galaxy anything would be great.

He's a retiree from SW Bell/ATT, so I'm going to look in to systems that support ATT wireless/3/4G.
