Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs finish 6-10 and end up picking #9. Andy Reid, John Dorsey, Pederson and Sutton are all retained.

2. The Chiefs extend QB Alex Smith for too much money, because they are the Chiefs. They fail to extend OLB Justin Houston and franchise tag him, because they are the Chiefs. They do, however, extend S Eric Berry at some point over the next 12 months.

3. The Chiefs cut QB Chase Daniel, TE Anthony Fasano, OLB Tamba Hali and CB Sean Smith.

4. The Chiefs tender OLB Josh Martin.

5. The Chiefs let walk RB Joe McKnight*, WR Kyle Williams, WR Junior Hemingway, OT Ryan Harris, OT J'Marcus Webb, OT/G Jeff Linkenbach*, G Rishaw Johnson, C Rodney Hudson, DE Allen Bailey, OLB Dezmon Moses* and CB Chris Owens. (*Will not be included in future mock assumptions, as I no longer believe they will be on the final 53.)

6. The Chiefs re-sign FB Anthony Sherman, LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

7. The Chiefs sign OLB Ricky Sapp (Texans) to a 2 year, $4m deal.

8. They receive four compensatory picks: a 3rd, a 4th, a 5th, and a 6th.

On with the show:



1. CB P.J. Williams, Florida State

CP's hopes for the Chiefs to package their picks and move up for a QB will be dashed when Alex Smith is eventually signed long term. As a result, the Chiefs will be in the market for a long, tall CB to replace Sean Smith. The Chiefs need a bigtime infusion of talent at this position, as Marcus Cooper is their only starter-level talent.

Whatever CB "wins" the Combine will be the Chiefs pick here. Dorsey loves size, speed, and athleticism with potential over anything proven. Right now, that's looking like Williams: 6'0", great speed, and athleticism out the ying-yang. Even though Ifo Ekpre-Olomu may be better, Dorsey's not taking a 5'9" corner, period.

2. WR Stefon Diggs, Maryland

Say it with me now: speed, speed, speed. If John Dorsey loves anything in his offensive weapons, it's shit-tons of speed. Diggs should run a great 40 yard dash, and has the potential to be a special route-runner. His average size (6'0", just shy of 200) will not be a deterrent.

2. FS Karl Joseph, West Virginia

The Chiefs give up their 3rd, their 4th, and their 6th to move up to the bottom of the 2nd.

This defense needs more attitude. It needs a guy who can cover large areas of ground, and a guy who can hit with attitude. You're welcome. The Chiefs just drafted their new trendsetter, to replace the absence of attitude left by Brandon Flowers and cutting Hali.

3. WR Kasen Williams, Washington

There are fewer secrets better kept in college football than how talented Kasen Williams is. With a quiet style of play, Williams has amassed really good numbers despite the fact that he never seems to jump off the screen. He's just a solid route-runner with fantastic hands, and will be a dramatic upgrade from Junior Hemingway.

4. TE Randall Telfer, USC

It's harder to scout TEs that Dorsey would be interested in, because the flashy TEs that jump out aren't the kind he likes. He prefers in-line blockers who can receive, and it's not clear who exactly's great at that yet.

Telfer's the name I keep coming back to over and over again. He fits the definition of what Dorsey loves at the position.

5. CB/S Eric Rowe, Utah

Not immediately clear where exactly Rowe will fit in, but he's a 6'1" behemoth out of a pro-style defense with ample experience playing FS, and will be playing CB full time this year. Anybody reminded of Keith McGill would be right, except Rowe is less physically gifted. Nonetheless, I think the size and flexibility Rowe brings is worth considering.

5. ILB Mike Hull, Penn State

The race against time is on, and the Chiefs need to start thinking a little about life after DJ. James Michael-Johnson is a really solid option, but Mike Hull is a really athletic and ridiculously fast linebacker that could time in the 4.5s. He could offer the blitz/coverage/spying that the team depends on DJ to do. I don't know if he can make up for DJ's great mind for the game, but that's definitely what Dorsey is looking for.

6. C Brandon Vitabile, Northwestern

We know what Dorsey likes in a center, and it remains to be seen if Vitabile fits that mold. But there's no denying his credentials: 40 straight starts, excellent ability to organize a line, and great both against the run and the pass. The knock on him is that he might be undersized, which seals his fate against John Dorsey, but it's my mock and I can cry if I want to.

7. DE Cameron Botticelli, Minnesota

Pure Al Davis/John Dorsey athleticism pick.

In the preseason game Peter King said he thinks we could have 12 draft picks with or comp picks added.

Would love to see us have a draft like the 49ers and Rams with that. Move up to get a player and even take a risk on a high potential guy that falls with our extra pick just like Marcus Lattimore and Brandon Thompson.

He put up approx. 850 yards as a freshman and was on pace for 1000 as a sophomore before he broke his leg this past season. (Says the leg is 110% and he's in better condition than at the same point last season.)

He's blazing fast and can actually play football, as opposed to former Terrapin Heyward-Bey, who was a track guy who played football.

He basically fits the profile of a Dorsey pick.

And while we all know that the team is dire for both CB's and WR's, I don't think team need plays into Dorsey's picks whatsoever, as evidenced by the 2014 draft where the Chiefs didn't take a single receiver in a draft class that was absolutely loaded with them despite the screaming obvious need for upgrading the position.

Dennard, Verrett and Roby were all on the board and considered first round talents at CB. Problem is, they don't fit the pre-draft parameters that Dorsey plugs into the Decision Lens software, i.e., they are all under 6'0" tall.

Deone Bucannon and Jimmie Ward were available at S.

Xavier S'ua-Filo at OG.

Benjamin, Lee, Matthews, Richardson at WR.

And I'd even argue that a guy like Kyle Van Noy would have been a substantially better pick than Ford due to his scheme and positional versatility in that if he wasn't going to beat out either Hali or Houston, he'd most certainly be an upgrade to whatever we had on roster for the MLB spot next to Johnson.

All these guys would have filled a more immediate need than backup/special teams material. A team with the holes that the Chiefs have shouldn't be picking up long term projects/special teamers in the first round. That's what 5 through 7 rounds are for.

Murray was a complete waste of a pick for the simple fact that he gives you nothing above and beyond Chase Daniel with the exception of less experience. The guy is 23 and only three years younger than Daniel.

LDT and Fulton were/are major projects even though Fulton is running with the first team. (Which goes to show you how absolutely shitty this team was at the OG position.)

They might have drafted for future need (as all teams most certainly do), but it most certainly wasn't for immediate need.

Ford will be getting a lot of PT. I'd say he'll play about 60% of the time on defense as a pass rusher, particularly 3rd downs.
Gaines should get some PT as the nickel and 4th DB since he isn't strong enough for #1 WR's.
DAT will play immediately.

If you're expecting any player from the 5th to 7th rd to play immediately from day 1 as an immediate impact player, your team is in trouble.
