The Next Chapter of the Legendary “Star Trek” TV Franchise Will Premiere on the CBS Television Network, Then Move to CBS All Access Digital Subscription Service

STUDIO CITY, CALIF. AND NEW YORK, N.Y. – Nov. 2, 2015 – CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new “Star Trek” television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

The next chapter of the “Star Trek” franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous “Star Trek” television series.

The brand-new “Star Trek” will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer for the new “Star Trek” TV series. Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films “Star Trek” (2009) with Roberto Orci, and “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof. Both films were produced and directed by J.J. Abrams.

The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series SCORPION and LIMITLESS, along with Kadin and Orci, and for HAWAII FIVE-0 with Orci.

“Star Trek,” which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016, is one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time. The original “Star Trek” spawned a dozen feature films and five successful television series. Almost half a century later, the “Star Trek” television series are licensed on a variety of different platforms in more than 190 countries, and the franchise still generates more than a billion social media impressions every month.

Born from the mind of Gene Roddenberry, the original “Star Trek” series debuted on Sept. 8, 1966 and aired for three seasons – a short run that belied the influence it would have for generations. The series also broke new ground in storytelling and cultural mores, providing a progressive look at topics including race relations, global politics and the environment.

“There is no better time to give ‘Star Trek’ fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic ‘Star Trek,’ and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

“Every day, an episode of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise is seen in almost every country in the world,” said Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group. “We can’t wait to introduce ‘Star Trek’s’ next voyage on television to its vast global fan base.”

CBS All Access offers its customers more than 7,500 episodes from the current television season, previous seasons and classic shows on demand nationwide, as well as the ability to stream local CBS stations live in more than 110 markets. Subscribers can use the service online and across devices via CBS.com, the CBS App for iOS, Android and Windows 10, as well as on connected devices such as Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku players and Roku TV, with more connected devices to come.

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film “Star Trek Beyond,” which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016

We're getting some more Klingons. I am interested to see where they go with this. Personally, I like the idea of the houses all having slightly different physical appearances. I am curious if this is going to be a way to recon the appearance of the original Klingons seen in TOS.

Star Trek fans may want to hold onto their seats when Star Trek: Discovery returns to CBS All Access in early 2019 because the show’s makeup designer is predicting a strong reaction to the new design of the Klingons.

Glenn Hetrick’s work on Star Trek: Discovery Season One earned an Emmy Nomination and he recently spoke to SyFy Wire about the work he’s doing for the show. Hetrick says the new, hairless look for the Klingons in Discovery can be explained by the story of Kahless the Unforgettable, the great Klingon spiritual leader, who dipped a lock of his own hair into lava to create the first bat’leth.

Hetrick says the new look of the Klingons in Star Trek: Discovery Season Two will be similarly rooted in story and Star Trek canon.

"We're obsessed with that story," Hetrick said. "And as we unpack it, we're going to find tons of other reasons for the Klingon look...I think people are going to freak out when this unfurls in front of them."

At Star Trek Las Vegas, Hetrick teased that a major Klingon redesign was being worked on for Discovery’s second season.

“As we move into Season Two, it has been a while since we have been with our characters,” Hetrick said. “It has been a while since we have seen our Klingon friends. So, everything keeps evolving. The story has evolved. And I can guarantee you this, you are going to be blown away that they have a completely new look, yet again, going into season two.

“In season two, you are going to see much different designs. You are going to see different houses you haven’t seen before. One of the most important things to us was that at this point in canon, as we head towards the current version of unification, the houses really each grow up on different planets. It is an Empire, it is not just Qo’noS…We have seen six of the great houses in close up in season one. As we move forward into the next season, I promise that we will continue exploring and unpacking and unfolding that infinitely interesting story of what the Klingon culture looks like on a wider level.”

I can't imagine they could possibly make the Klingon makeup worse. It's not even the lack of hair or grey-black skin for me, it's that the makeup is so thick the actors can barely move their faces. If all they did was scale that back it'd be a huge improvement.

I don't mind the Klingon appearance mainly because every race is far too humanoid looking. In TNG, we find out the reason that is, but it took place millions of years prior so there probably would be a great differentiation amongst the physical appearances. TOS to TNG was a crazy difference in Klingons, and I feel TNG to Discovery was nearly the same level of difference.

They had already changed the appearance of the Klingons prior to TNG (Star Trek I and III)

Supposedly that's the "intended" way for Klingonese to sound like given its creators accounted for actors speaking through prosthetics and heavy makeup.

That's a crock of shit. There's nothing wrong with the Klingon make-up or language dating back over 30 years. There was absolutely no reason to **** with it.

I didn't like the modernization of the ships, but I understood the need for it - younger audiences would think 60s era sets and designs were lame. The uniform changes annoyed me, but I could deal with it. But what the did to the Klingons - that was just flat out ****tarded.

Agreed. Klingon episodes in TNG and DS9 were always some of the best episodes. It was cool to watch what they did with ceremonies, behavior, and ritual. And while they spoke through the universal translator in TNG and DS9, the Klingon words and phrases that did pop up were never annoying or putrid to listen to.

Nearly ever Klingon scene I watch in Discovery tempts me to fall asleep. All of the crazy ****ing lunatic warrior charm of the 24th century Klingons is nowhere to be found.

If that's what they're actually supposed to be like, then **** that alien race. And **** the show, too.

Isn't CBS desperately trying to make this show work? Why did Rick Berman have so much success finding great character actors to make aliens into real characters in spike of the makeup hindrances? Is Alex Kurtzman inept or something?
